Public questions high travel and meal allocations amid unstable city finances.

Tanjungpinang’s City Council (DPRD) is under fire after revelations that its 2025 budget allocates billions of rupiah for travel, meals, and uniforms, despite the city’s strained financial condition.

Lavish Spending Sparks Debate

The Secretariat of Tanjungpinang’s DPRD has allocated Rp3.6 billion (≈SGD 288,000) for official travel, Rp347 million (≈SGD 27,760) for uniforms, and Rp1.304 billion (≈SGD 104,000) for meals in 2025. These figures surfaced as the city government struggles with unstable finances, leading to sharp criticism from local observers.

Official Response

DPRD Secretary M. Amin confirmed the budget figures, emphasizing that they had already been reduced compared to previous years.

“It has been pressed (efficiency). Last year, travel expenses alone reached tens of billions of rupiah,” Amin said on Tuesday, September 2.

Academics Call for Prioritization

Political analyst Robby Patria questioned the necessity of such allocations, arguing that the benefits of official trips remain unclear to the public.

“Show the public what the trips have achieved. Otherwise, it would be better to redirect the funds to urgent needs in Tanjungpinang,” Robby stated on Wednesday, September 3.

Public Funds and Transparency

Critics argue that DPRD should prioritize projects that directly benefit residents. Robby highlighted the lack of transparency regarding the outcomes of official trips and stressed that the council should shift its focus to pressing issues such as flood management.

Redirecting Funds for Public Needs

Flooding remains one of Tanjungpinang’s most persistent problems. According to Robby, if even a portion of the Rp3.6 billion travel budget were redirected, the city could reduce reliance on bank loans to fund critical infrastructure.

“They should move the budget to urgent matters. Floods trouble the people the most,” he added.

Broader Impact on Public Trust

This controversy underscores a recurring issue in Indonesia’s regional politics: balancing bureaucratic expenditures with community needs. For both Indonesians and neighboring Singaporeans who closely monitor developments in the Riau Islands, the case highlights growing public demand for transparency, accountability, and financial prudence at the local government level.

The debate over DPRD Tanjungpinang’s 2025 budget reflects wider frustrations with government spending priorities. With billions earmarked for travel and meals during financial instability, residents and academics alike are pressing for accountability and redirection of funds toward urgent public needs. For the region, the controversy serves as a reminder that transparency in budgeting is key to sustaining public trust and delivering tangible improvements in people’s lives.
