Food prices remain key inflation driver while air travel discounts ease price pressures.

The Riau Islands Province (Kepri) recorded controlled inflation in August 2025 at 0.18 percent month-to-month (mtm), slightly down from July’s 0.19 percent. Despite this, annual inflation rose to 2.19 percent, reflecting a mixed but relatively stable trend.

Inflation Trends Across Kepri

According to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), inflation was observed across all three Consumer Price Index (CPI) regions in Kepri. Batam registered the lowest increase at 0.08 percent, followed by Tanjungpinang at 0.26 percent, while Karimun saw the highest at 1.03 percent. On an annual basis, Kepri’s 2.19 percent inflation placed it fourth lowest in Sumatra, trailing Lampung, Bengkulu, and Bangka Belitung.

Food Prices Drive Inflation

The main contributor to August inflation came from the food, beverages, and tobacco group, which rose by 0.83 percent and added 0.24 percent to total inflation. Price hikes were driven by key commodities such as red chili, shallots, broiler chicken, long beans, green chili, and kretek cigarettes. Limited supply from producing regions, strong consumer demand, and distribution challenges amplified the upward pressure.

Transport Discounts Ease Pressure

Offsetting food price increases, the transportation sector recorded deflation of 0.74 percent. This decline was largely due to airline promotions linked to Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day celebrations, helping ease overall inflationary pressures in the province.

Role of BI and TPID

Bank Indonesia (BI) Kepri emphasized that stable inflation was achieved through close coordination with the Regional Inflation Control Team (TPID). Programs under the National Movement for Food Inflation Control (GNPIP) focused on the “4K strategy”: price affordability, supply availability, smooth distribution, and effective communication. Initiatives included cheap markets, food subsidy programs, and accelerated rice distribution under the SPHP scheme.

Outlook for September 2025

Looking ahead, BI and TPID highlighted potential risks for September, including fluctuations in global gold prices, food price adjustments from key production regions, and regulatory changes in consumer goods shipping. However, the upcoming horticultural harvest and steady SPHP rice distribution are expected to cushion inflationary pressures.

Broader Economic Impact

For Kepri, maintaining inflation within the national target range of 2.5 ±1 percent is crucial to protect household purchasing power and ensure regional economic stability. The province’s performance—better than the national average of 2.31 percent and Sumatra’s 3.04 percent—underscores the effectiveness of coordinated policies. This stability holds significant importance for both Indonesians and neighboring Singaporeans engaged in cross-border trade and travel.

Kepri’s August 2025 inflation reflects a delicate balance between food-driven price hikes and transportation-driven relief. With strong BI-TPID collaboration and targeted government measures, the province remains on track to meet its inflation targets, supporting economic resilience for its residents and regional partners.
