Wife of jailed ex-president Yoon Suk Yeol accused of stock manipulation, bribery, and election meddling

Former South Korean First Lady Kim Keon Hee has been arrested on multiple charges ranging from stock manipulation to bribery, marking the first time in the nation’s history that both a former president and first lady are imprisoned.

Arrest and Charges

On 12 August 2025, Kim Keon Hee, 52, was taken into custody following a four-hour court session in Seoul. She faces 16 criminal charges, including manipulating stock prices linked to Deutsch Motors, accepting luxury gifts, and interfering in candidate nominations during the 2022 parliamentary by-election and last year’s general election. Prosecutors allege she earned over 800 million won (Rp 9.36 billion) from the stock scheme.

She is also accused of accepting two Dior handbags, a diamond necklace, and other benefits from the controversial Unification Church in exchange for business favours, as well as influencing infrastructure projects such as the Seoul–Yangpyeong highway route change and approvals for the Yangpyeong Gongheung District.

The Dior Handbag Controversy

One of the most high-profile allegations involves a covertly filmed video showing a pastor purchasing a Dior bag valued at 3 million won (Rp 35 million) and allegedly delivering it to Kim in September 2022. The video, released by left-leaning media outlet Voice of Seoul, stirred national debate and intensified opposition attacks on her husband’s administration. South Korea’s anti-corruption law prohibits public officials and their spouses from accepting gifts worth over 1 million won at once or more than 3 million won annually.

Political Fallout and Historical First

Kim’s arrest comes months after her husband, former president Yoon Suk Yeol, was impeached and jailed in January 2025 for mishandling a military emergency declaration that plunged the nation into unrest. While South Korea has a history of prosecuting former leaders, this is the first time both a former president and first lady have been incarcerated.

During his presidency, Yoon vetoed multiple opposition bills calling for a special counsel to investigate allegations against Kim, with his last veto issued just a week before declaring martial law. A special counsel was eventually appointed in June 2025 under President Lee Jae Myung.

From Entrepreneur to Political Lightning Rod

Before entering the presidential residence, Kim ran Covana Contents, an art exhibition company, and was known for her interest in art, fashion, and philosophy. Unlike her predecessors, she maintained a high public profile, often making unscripted appearances and statements. Her tenure as first lady was marked by diplomatic protocol controversies and allegations of receiving luxury goods.

Kim had already faced public backlash before Yoon’s 2021 presidential win over allegations she inflated credentials on resumes submitted to universities and companies, for which she later apologised. Despite pledging to focus solely on the role of presidential spouse, she continued to attract scrutiny for unofficial activities and solo engagements abroad.

Not the First First Lady Under Scrutiny

While unprecedented in scale, Kim’s case is not the first involving a South Korean first lady. Previous spouses of former presidents — Lee Soon-ja (Chun Doo-hwan), Kwon Yang-sook (Roh Moo-hyun), and Kim Yoon-ok (Lee Myung-bak) — have all faced varying degrees of prosecutorial questioning over alleged corruption or misuse of influence, though most cases did not result in formal charges.

Kim Keon Hee’s arrest represents a watershed moment in South Korean politics, intertwining allegations of personal misconduct, political corruption, and the downfall of a presidency. For both domestic and regional observers, the case highlights the country’s uncompromising legal approach to political figures — and the political shockwaves that follow when power and scandal collide.
