Man Found Hanging in His Kiosk After Days Missing; Letter Reveals Family and Money Troubles

Residents of Kampung Durian were shaken after a local phone technician was found dead by suicide inside his closed kiosk. The tragic discovery has highlighted the silent pressures of financial and domestic burdens faced by many informal workers.

Shocking Discovery at Phone Kiosk

On Sunday, July 20, 2025, around 10:40 AM, residents of Kampung Durian, Bengkong Sadai, Batam, were left in shock when 30-year-old MIA, a local phone technician, was found hanging in his repair kiosk. The victim had reportedly not been seen for two days, prompting concern from neighboring shopkeepers.

His lifeless body was discovered by a close acquaintance and fellow vendor who, after failing to reach him via WhatsApp, decided to check in person. When peeking through a gap, he saw MIA hanging at the rear of the kiosk. Authorities were immediately alerted.

Police Confirm Cause of Death

Police from the Bengkong precinct, led by Chief Iptu Yuli Endra, arrived on site with the Inafis team from Polresta Barelang to conduct a crime scene investigation. No signs of physical violence were found on the victim’s body apart from the marks left by the hanging rope.

“The initial assessment points to suicide. There were no external injuries besides the ligature marks on the neck,” said Endra. The body was evacuated to Bhayangkara Hospital for further examination.

Mounting Economic Pressures

Investigations revealed that MIA had been facing mounting financial hardship. He had not paid rent for his kiosk for the past three months. The landlord had issued warnings, demanding that the space be vacated if payment was not made.

Several neighbors confirmed that MIA had frequently voiced concerns about his inability to make ends meet, adding that the business had slowed significantly in recent months.

Family Issues Add to the Burden

Beyond financial trouble, police noted that domestic issues may have further fueled MIA’s despair. A farewell letter addressed to his wife was found at the scene, indicating deep emotional distress related to both personal and financial failures.

According to Kapolsek Endra, “The letter gives insight into his mental state and points to personal struggles at home as a contributing factor.”

Mental Health Crisis Among Informal Workers

This incident is part of a worrying trend in Southeast Asia, where economic instability and lack of mental health support leave many vulnerable. Informal workers, especially those operating small businesses like MIA, often bear the brunt of economic downturns without access to safety nets.

The local authorities have urged community members to be more attentive to signs of distress among their neighbors, encouraging open dialogue and mental health awareness.

MIA’s death underscores the silent suffering endured by individuals trapped between financial instability and family pressures. For communities across Indonesia and Singapore, this case is a grim reminder of the importance of mental health support and economic security, especially for those working outside formal systems.
