Daily infections fluctuate sharply as health officials strengthen monitoring across Batam’s public clinics.

Hundreds of acute respiratory infection cases continue to be recorded each day in Batam, with adults representing the largest affected age group as the city also experiences periods of unhealthy air.

Daily Cases Jumped to 473
The Batam Health Office reported 473 cases of acute respiratory infections, locally known as ISPA, on October 5, compared with 339 cases on October 3. Earlier figures included 480 cases on October 1 and 345 on October 2, indicating substantial day-to-day fluctuations.

Later Report Records 412 Cases
A later Batam Pos report recorded 412 ISPA cases, fewer than the 473 reported on October 5 but still above 400. Adults continued to account for the largest share of reported cases.

Adults Account for Largest Share
Of the 473 cases recorded on October 5, 218 involved people aged 19 to 59, representing nearly half of the total. Children aged zero to five accounted for 86 cases, those aged 10 to 18 recorded 77, children aged five to nine accounted for 63, and residents aged over 60 recorded 29 cases.

Haze Not Confirmed as Sole Cause
The reported ISPA cases coincided with periods of poor air quality in Batam, although a direct causal link between the haze and the case figures has not been established. Health officials have also pointed to factors such as changing weather, nutrition, immunity and daily activities. On October 7 at 8 a.m., the Hang Nadim Meteorological Station recorded a PM2.5 concentration of 85.3 micrograms per cubic meter, which was reported as unhealthy.

Health Centers Strengthen Monitoring
The Batam Health Office has instructed public health centers to strengthen ISPA surveillance and educate residents about respiratory risks. People are advised to reduce outdoor activity when air quality deteriorates, wear masks when necessary, maintain adequate fluid and nutritional intake, and seek medical attention if respiratory symptoms develop.

Batam’s fluctuating daily ISPA figures show that respiratory illness remains an important public health concern even when case numbers fall from one day to the next. For Indonesians in Batam, health authorities are emphasizing prevention and continued monitoring rather than attributing the increase to a single cause. Singaporeans planning activities in Batam may also consider checking current local air-quality conditions, particularly during periods of visible haze.
