Authorities step up screening, hospital readiness and public education as Africa outbreak spreads across borders.

Indonesia has strengthened health monitoring at international entry points and expanded Ebola readiness in hospitals after the World Health Organization declared the African outbreak a public health emergency of international concern.

Heightened Screening At Entry Points
Health Ministry communications chief Aji Muhawarman said on May 18 that Indonesia is closely monitoring travellers arriving from outbreak-affected countries, with any suspected Ebola cases to be referred immediately to designated hospitals and reported through the national emergency response system.

Hospital Coordination And Early Detection
The government is coordinating with hospitals and public health agencies nationwide to strengthen early detection and response capacities, including isolation procedures, case reporting and staff training so facilities can respond quickly if imported cases are detected.

WHO Emergency Declaration And Global Risk
On May 17, the WHO classified the Ebola outbreak in Africa as a public health emergency of international concern—the second-highest alert under international health regulations—citing cross-border transmission, high mortality and uncertainty over the scale and trajectory of the crisis, though it has not declared a pandemic.

Current Outbreak Scope And Transmission
The latest outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain and is so far confined to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighbouring Uganda, with more than 90 deaths reported. Ebola is thought to spill over to humans through contact with infected wildlife such as chimpanzees, gorillas and bats, and then spreads via direct contact with bodily fluids or contaminated materials.

Symptoms, Public Advice And Risk Communication
Early symptoms include fever, fatigue, muscle pain and headaches, progressing to vomiting and diarrhoea. Aji said the Health Ministry has expanded public education and risk communication through its official Ebola portal to counter misinformation and prevent panic, urging people to avoid contact with suspected cases, animals or contaminated objects and advising travellers from affected countries to seek medical attention if symptoms appear within 21 days.

Indonesia’s tightened screening and preparedness underline how seriously it is treating the Ebola emergency, even though cases remain confined to parts of Africa. For Indonesians and Singaporeans, the measures are a reminder that early vigilance, clear information and strong health systems are crucial to stopping dangerous viruses at borders before they spread.
