Suspects allegedly stole luxury sunglasses, jewellery and gifts in two April shop theft cases.

Singapore police arrested three foreign nationals in Changi Airport’s transit areas after staff reported missing high value goods, recovering all stolen items before the suspects could depart.

Theft Cases And Arrests
Police said on May 4 that three foreign nationals will be charged over two separate shop theft cases in Changi Airport’s transit areas in April. In both incidents, store employees noticed missing items and contacted the Airport Police Division, which used CCTV and ground inquiries to identify and arrest the suspects before their flights left Singapore.

First Case In Terminal 1
In the first case, officers were alerted around 2.40pm on April 22 after a 60 year old man allegedly took a pair of sunglasses worth about $750 from a Terminal 1 transit shop and left without paying. When police located and arrested him, they recovered the sunglasses and also found two cans of tea valued at about $70 that had been stolen from another store.

Second Case In Terminal 3
The second incident on April 23 involved two women aged 59 and 61 at a Terminal 3 transit jewellery outlet. Around 7.10am they allegedly took three bracelets, three bangles, two rings and a watch worth about $2,740 while a staff member was serving another customer. Airport police later arrested both women and recovered all of the stolen jewellery.

Additional Stolen Items Discovered
Investigations further showed the two women had earlier stolen two toy cars and a key chain worth about $33 from another shop in the transit area. All three suspects are expected to be charged in court on May 5, with the man facing two counts of theft in dwelling plus an additional charge of fraudulent possession of property, and the women each facing two counts of theft in dwelling.

Possible Penalties And Security Message
If convicted of theft in dwelling, each offender may be jailed for up to seven years, fined, or both. A fraudulent possession conviction carries up to one year’s jail, a $3,000 fine, or both. The cases underline the close cooperation between airport retailers and police, and show how surveillance and rapid response are used to protect Changi’s transit shops and deter opportunistic crime.

The swift arrests and full recovery of stolen goods at Changi Airport demonstrate Singapore’s firm stance against theft, even in busy transit zones where passengers may assume they can evade accountability. For Indonesians and Singaporeans who travel frequently, the cases are a reminder that airport shops are closely monitored and that cross border visitors are held to the same strict standards that help keep regional travel hubs safe and trusted.
