Platform raises minimum age, deactivates young users and curbs targeted ads after reprimand.

YouTube has agreed to Indonesia’s strict new rules on children’s social media use, raising its minimum age and preparing to deactivate under-16 accounts after a government warning.

New Rules For High Risk Platforms
Under regulations that took effect in March, Indonesia requires social media companies it classifies as high risk to deactivate accounts belonging to users under 16. The move is part of a broader effort to shield children from harmful content, data misuse and commercial exploitation. Earlier in April, the government sent Google a letter of reprimand, saying YouTube had not cooperated fully with the new curbs, even as other platforms started adjusting their policies.

YouTube Issues Letter Of Compliance
On April 22, Communications Minister Meutya Hafid said YouTube had submitted a formal letter of compliance to her ministry. She told a press conference that the platform has changed the minimum age in its guidelines to 16 for Indonesian users. The letter followed weeks of pressure from Jakarta, signaling that Indonesia is prepared to push major global platforms to align with its domestic standards on youth protection.

Deactivation Of Underage Accounts And Ad Changes
Meutya said YouTube has outlined plans to deactivate accounts held by users below 16 and will phase out advertisements targeting children and teenagers. At the same event, Danny Ardianto, Head of Government Affairs and Public Policy for YouTube in Asia Pacific, said the company shares the Indonesian government’s commitment to protecting children online. The shift could reduce data driven marketing aimed at young users and alter how brands reach youth audiences in one of the region’s largest digital markets.

Broader Industry Compliance In Indonesia
According to Meutya, other major platforms including X, Bigo Live, Meta and TikTok have already complied with the under-16 rules, and the government expects Roblox to follow soon. The coordinated response suggests global companies are adapting to a more fragmented regulatory landscape in which large markets set their own age thresholds and safety requirements. For Indonesia, the policy is an attempt to standardise protections across diverse services and to close gaps that might allow underage users to migrate between platforms.

Regional Signals For Child Online Protection
Indonesia’s enforcement stance sends a strong signal to neighbouring countries such as Singapore, where regulators and parents are also debating youth exposure to social media. By forcing YouTube and others to harden age limits and rethink targeted advertising, Jakarta is raising expectations for platform accountability in South east Asia. For Indonesians and Singaporeans, these changes may lead to safer online spaces for children, while prompting new conversations about digital literacy, parental oversight and how platforms verify user age without undermining privacy.

YouTube’s decision to comply with Indonesia’s under-16 social media restrictions marks a significant victory for Jakarta’s push to protect children in a rapidly expanding digital ecosystem. For Indonesians and Singaporeans, the move highlights a regional shift toward stricter platform rules, balancing access to online content with stronger safeguards that could shape how young people interact with social media for years to come.
