Higher living expenses in neighboring countries are making Batam a more attractive bargain destination
As living costs climb in Singapore and Malaysia, Batam is gaining new appeal not just as a quick getaway, but as a practical destination for cheaper shopping, dining, and everyday spending.
Batam Benefits From Regional Cost Pressures
Rising living costs in Singapore and Malaysia are beginning to reshape travel patterns to Batam, with the city increasingly seen as a more affordable alternative for nearby residents. In Singapore, food inflation rose to 1.6 percent in February 2026 from 1.2 percent earlier, while fuel prices climbed to around S$2.35 per liter, equivalent to about Rp31,000. In Malaysia, food inflation remained relatively stable at 1.3 percent to 1.5 percent, but pressure on household spending persisted as prices of key commodities such as crude palm oil were expected to rise further in 2026, alongside fuel costs.
Shopping Has Become A Key Pull Factor
Batam’s tourism office says the city is seeing a natural rise in international visitor arrivals, especially for shopping. Head of the Batam Culture and Tourism Office Ardiwinata said travelers are increasingly choosing Batam because goods and daily necessities are more affordable than in their home countries. He added that the pattern is visible on the ground, with many tourists, particularly from Singapore, buying goods in large quantities at shopping centers across the city.
Officials See Clear Signs On The Ground
According to Ardiwinata, the trend is especially noticeable in large retail hubs such as Grand Batam, where Singaporean shoppers are becoming more visible. He said many visitors openly admit that they come to Batam because prices are more competitive. This suggests Batam is no longer functioning only as a transit or leisure stop, but is gradually becoming a practical cross-border spending destination for people seeking better value.
Batam Is Backing The Trend With Development
The Batam city government is optimistic that its 2026 target of 1.7 million foreign visitor arrivals can be achieved. Officials say that confidence is supported not only by external pressures in neighboring countries, but also by domestic improvements in tourism infrastructure. Under the leadership of Mayor Amsakar Achmad and Deputy Mayor Li Claudia Chandra, the city has continued widening roads and expanding tourism-supporting facilities such as entertainment venues, restaurants, and hotels to strengthen Batam’s attractiveness.
Events And Identity Are Expanding Batam’s Appeal
Beyond shopping, Batam is also trying to build a broader tourism identity through events and cultural programming. Ardiwinata pointed to activities such as the Nadin Festival, which recently brought together 180 artists from several Indonesian cities for poetry readings. These efforts show that Batam is positioning itself not only as an industrial city, but also as a more dynamic urban destination that offers affordability, accessibility, and a growing mix of cultural and lifestyle experiences.
Batam’s growing appeal amid rising prices in Singapore and Malaysia shows how regional economic pressures can create new tourism opportunities. For Indonesians, this trend could strengthen Batam’s role as both a shopping and hospitality hub. For Singaporeans, it highlights how nearby cities like Batam are becoming increasingly attractive as places to stretch household spending without traveling far. If this momentum continues, Batam may further establish itself as a cross-border economic and lifestyle alternative in the region.
