Police investigate cause after deadly crash near Jembatan V shocks Batam
A deadly single-vehicle crash in the Barelang area of Batam has left three junior high school students dead, renewing concern over underage riding and road safety supervision.
Three Students Killed in Morning Crash
Three students were killed in a single motorcycle accident at Bukit Bismillah, before Jembatan V Barelang, on Sunday, April 5, at around 8:50 a.m. The victims, identified by their initials RA, SA, and RS, were all ninth-grade students from SMPIT Insan Harapan in Sagulung. Their deaths have sent shockwaves through the local community, especially because all three were still in school.
Victims Found Beside Damaged Motorcycle
The accident was first discovered by residents passing through the area. The victims were found lying at the roadside next to a badly damaged Honda Beat motorcycle with plate number BP 8859 G. A local resident identified as Rio said the victims had already collapsed by the side of the road when they were found, and residents immediately reported the case to Galang Police before helping evacuate them to the hospital.
High Speed Suspected in Deadly Impact
Based on information gathered at the scene, the students were traveling from the direction of Jembatan I toward Jembatan V Barelang. They are suspected to have been riding at high speed before losing control and crashing into an electricity pole on the roadside. Rio said the severe damage to the motorcycle suggested the vehicle had been moving fast, and the impact reportedly threw the victims into a nearby ditch.
Police Still Investigating Exact Cause
Barelang Traffic Police chief Kompol Afiditya Arief Wibowo confirmed the crash and said it is being treated as a single-vehicle accident. However, police have not yet determined the exact cause. Officers are conducting a crime scene investigation, gathering witness statements, and examining whether alcohol or other factors may have played a role. Afiditya said witness information remains limited, so investigators are still working to establish a clearer timeline of what happened.
Warning Over Underage Riding
Following the crash, police urged parents to more closely supervise children who are not yet old enough to ride motorcycles. Authorities stressed that parental oversight is critical in preventing similar tragedies, especially on roads that can become dangerous when speed, inexperience, or possible negligence are involved. The incident has once again highlighted the risks of allowing underage students to operate motorcycles without proper control and supervision.
This tragedy is a painful reminder of how quickly a routine journey can turn fatal when young riders are involved in high-risk road conditions. For Indonesians, especially families in Batam, the crash underlines the urgent need for stronger parental supervision and road safety awareness for school-age children. For Singaporeans following developments in nearby Batam, it also reflects a wider regional concern over youth mobility, traffic enforcement, and the devastating cost of preventable accidents.
