Updated framework strengthens safety rules as Singapore expands next-generation EV charging options

Singapore is updating its EV charging rulebook to support newer technologies and tighten safety requirements, marking another step in the city-state’s broader push toward cleaner transport.

New Standard Takes Effect
From April 1, Singapore’s EV charging standard will be upgraded from Technical Reference 25 to Singapore Standard SS 722, according to the Land Transport Authority and Enterprise Singapore. The new standard sets updated specifications and guidelines for the design, installation, maintenance, and operation of EV charging stations, replacing a framework that had been in place since 2010.

Wireless and Mobile Charging Now Covered
A key change is that SS 722 creates room for emerging technologies, including wireless charging. Under the updated standard, compatible EVs can charge simply by parking over a charging pad, while safety requirements for this still-nascent technology are built into the framework. The standard also introduces requirements for mobile EV charging systems, meaning chargers mounted on moving vehicles that can function as charging points in different locations.

Review Included Industry Players
The update follows a review conducted between September 2020 and January 2022 involving representatives from 27 organizations in the EV ecosystem, including the Singapore branches of BYD and Tesla. That review looked at emerging charging solutions and the infrastructure requirements needed for their safe installation and operation, showing that the new rules are meant to keep pace with how quickly EV technology is evolving.

Faster Charging and Battery Swaps Get Attention
The new standard also expands coverage of battery charge and swap stations for four-wheel vehicles, beyond the earlier battery-swapping guidance for electric motorcycles. In addition, direct current fast chargers are now aligned with newer international standards, with stricter temperature controls, stronger cable insulation checks, and more precise power output requirements intended to improve reliability and safety.

Why the Update Matters
The shift to SS 722 matters because Singapore already requires EV chargers supplied in the country to meet national safety standards and be type-approved and registered under the Electric Vehicles Charging Act framework. By broadening the standard to include wireless, mobile, fast-charging, and battery-swapping systems, Singapore is laying the technical groundwork for wider EV adoption while trying to ensure that newer charging formats remain safe and dependable.

Singapore’s move to adopt SS 722 shows that EV policy is no longer just about adding more chargers, but also about preparing for the next generation of charging technology. For Indonesians, the update offers a glimpse of how stricter technical standards can support safer EV adoption as the region electrifies. For Singaporeans, it reinforces the city-state’s role as an early mover in building a more advanced and future-ready transport ecosystem.
