Police say act threatens religious harmony, suspect to be charged in court

A 36-year-old man has been arrested in Singapore after allegedly posting offensive remarks about Islam outside a residential unit in Tampines, in an incident police say threatens racial and religious harmony.

Offensive Note Found in Tampines
Police were alerted to the incident at Tampines Street 82 at around 3.40pm on March 15.

A handwritten note containing offensive remarks about Islam was found pasted outside a residential unit.

Pork Left at Doorstep
Authorities also discovered a piece of meat, believed to be pork, placed at the unit’s doorstep.

The act is considered particularly sensitive given religious dietary restrictions in Islam.

Suspect Arrested the Same Day
Police arrested a 36-year-old man on the same day the report was made.

He is expected to be charged in court on March 17.

Serious Consequences if Convicted
If found guilty, the man could face up to five years in jail, a fine, or both.

Police emphasised that such acts are treated seriously due to their potential to incite hostility.

Authorities Stress Religious Harmony
Law enforcement reiterated that Singapore maintains a strict stance against actions that threaten racial or religious harmony.

They warned that anyone engaging in such behaviour will be dealt with firmly under the law.

The case underscores Singapore’s zero-tolerance approach towards acts that could inflame religious tensions, as authorities continue to safeguard social cohesion in a multicultural society.
