New decree sets age limits, screen time guidelines and restrictions on AI tools in classrooms
Indonesia has introduced a national policy regulating the use of digital technology and artificial intelligence in education, aiming to balance innovation with safeguards for students.
Government Introduces AI Rules for Schools
Indonesia has issued a joint ministerial decree regulating the use of digital technology and artificial intelligence across its education system.
The policy covers all levels from early childhood education to universities and aims to guide responsible technology use in classrooms.
Seven Ministers Sign National Policy
The regulation was signed by seven cabinet ministers and coordinated by the Ministry for Human Development and Culture.
Key signatories include ministers overseeing home affairs, education, religious affairs, communication and digital affairs, and women’s empowerment.
Age-Based Technology Guidelines
The decree introduces guidelines on minimum age requirements and recommended usage duration for digital tools and AI.
Younger students will face stricter limitations on screen time and access to digital content, while older students will have more flexible usage rules.
Restrictions on Instant AI Answer Tools
At primary and secondary school levels, students will not be allowed to use AI tools that instantly generate answers to questions.
However, AI-based educational tools designed specifically for structured learning — such as robotics simulations — may still be allowed.
Policy Aims to Balance Innovation and Safety
Officials said the new rules are intended to maximise the benefits of digital technology while protecting students from potential risks.
The government believes clear guidelines are necessary as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly accessible across Indonesia’s education sector.
Indonesia’s new AI education policy marks a significant step in regulating emerging technologies in classrooms, ensuring that digital tools support learning while safeguarding students’ development and well-being.
