Court notes abuse occurred after confrontation over phone content
A 54-year-old man was sentenced on Feb 23 to six years’ jail for committing sexual offences against his 16-year-old daughter. Nine months of the term were imposed in lieu of caning as he is above 50 and therefore not eligible for caning.
Offences Took Place In 2024
The court heard that the incidents occurred in May 2024 after the man checked his daughter’s phone and discovered that she had exchanged inappropriate images with a male classmate.
On May 12, 2024, he brought the teenager and her younger sister to their grandparents’ home. While other family members were in the living room, he took the victim into a bedroom and locked the door.
Inside, he confronted her and ordered her to remove her clothing. Fearing that she might be harmed, the teenager complied.
He then committed acts that constituted outrage of modesty.
Second Incident Later That Night
After returning home later that night, the man instructed his daughter to shower with the bathroom door open.
He subsequently directed her to stand before him and committed further acts amounting to outrage of modesty while reprimanding her over the phone content.
The teenager later sought help from a relative and informed her mother about what had happened. A police report was lodged, and the man was arrested the same day.
The Charges
The accused pleaded guilty to three counts of using criminal force to outrage modesty while causing the victim to fear immediate hurt. Three additional charges were taken into consideration for sentencing.
The Case
The court heard that the victim was 16 in May 2024 when her father conducted a check on her phone.
He found that she had sent her male classmate nude photos and intimate videos of herself, while the classmate had also sent explicit photos to her.
The Sentencing
For using criminal force to outrage a person’s modesty, while putting them in fear of instant hurt, an offender can be jailed for between two and 10 years. They can also be caned.
The court underscored the seriousness of offences committed against minors, particularly where there is a breach of trust within the family. The sentence reflects the gravity of such conduct under Singapore law.
