Three suspects arrested in premeditated scheme involving threats and online transfers

A Malaysian national fell victim to robbery and extortion in Batam after arranging a meeting through a same-sex dating app, in what police described as a premeditated scheme.

Meeting Arranged Through Dating App
The case was revealed during a press conference by Barelang Police Criminal Investigation Unit head, Kompol M. Debby Tri Andrestian, on Feb 19.

The incident occurred on Saturday, Feb 15, at around 7.30pm. The victim, identified by the initials MAg, was staying at a hotel in Nagoya, Batam, and used the Grindr app to look for a companion.

After communicating through the app, the victim agreed to meet a man who later picked him up.

Lured To Empty House
According to police, the victim was taken to an empty house prepared by the perpetrators.

Two other men then arrived, pretending to conduct a raid. The trio had allegedly divided their roles beforehand.

“One acted as bait, another intimidated and threatened the victim, while the third handled the money transfer process,” Debby said.

Threats And Forced Transfers
Inside the empty house, the victim was allegedly intimidated and threatened with being reported to the local neighbourhood chief and residents for immoral conduct.

He was also threatened with being paraded around the housing area.

Out of fear, the victim transferred money five times using a barcode linked to an online gambling application prepared by the suspects, amounting to a total of 5,000 Malaysian ringgit.

Three Suspects Arrested
Following the report, Barelang Police’s operations team arrested three suspects — identified as WS, YW and HD — on Feb 18.

Police said YW was the mastermind who created the dating app account to lure victims, HD acted as the bait who picked up the victim, and WS carried out the intimidation and managed the transfer barcode.

Two of the three suspects are repeat offenders in similar cases.

Evidence Seized And Charges Filed
Authorities seized three mobile phones, a Honda Scoopy motorcycle and Rp4.3 million in cash as evidence.

The suspects have been charged under Article 482 paragraph (2) and/or Article 479 paragraph (2) letters A and D of Law No. 1 of 2023 on the Criminal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of 12 years’ imprisonment.

The case highlights the risks associated with meeting strangers through online platforms, particularly when encounters are arranged in unfamiliar locations. Police continue to urge the public to exercise caution and report suspicious activity promptly.
