Tobacco items hidden in cosmetics shipment uncovered during enhanced ICA checks
More than 30,000 tobacco-related products, including e-vaporisers, were seized at Tuas Checkpoint after officers uncovered the contraband hidden inside a Malaysia-registered lorry.
Concealed In Cosmetics Shipment
The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said the incident took place on Feb 2 at Tuas Checkpoint.
During enhanced checks on a Malaysia-registered lorry, officers discovered more than 22,000 e-vaporisers and related components, along with over 14,000 heat-not-burn tobacco products.
The items had been concealed within a consignment declared as cosmetics.
Two Men Arrested
The 28-year-old driver and his 21-year-old attendant were arrested at the scene.
ICA confirmed in a Facebook post on Feb 19 that the case has been referred to the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) for further investigation.
Tougher Penalties In Force
Singapore introduced enhanced penalties for vape-related offences on Sept 1 last year.
First-time offenders convicted of importing e-vaporisers face a jail term of up to six months, a fine of up to S$10,000, or both.
Strict Enforcement
The authorities have consistently maintained strict enforcement against the importation and distribution of prohibited tobacco products.
Ongoing Border Vigilance
The seizure underscores continued vigilance at Singapore’s land checkpoints, particularly against smuggling attempts disguised as legitimate cargo.
ICA reiterated that it works closely with partner agencies to detect and deter cross-border contraband activities.
The Tuas Checkpoint seizure highlights Singapore’s firm stance against the illegal importation of vapes and tobacco products. With enhanced penalties now in effect, authorities continue to tighten enforcement at key border points to curb smuggling attempts and protect public health.
