Sabah tops national tally as Health Ministry urges vigilance

Malaysia has recorded 2,571 tuberculosis cases nationwide as of Epidemiological Week 5 of 2026, prompting health authorities to urge continued vigilance ahead of the festive season.

503 New Cases In Latest Week
The Ministry of Health confirmed that 503 new tuberculosis cases were detected up to Epidemiological Week 5 this year. This brings the cumulative total for 2026 to 2,571 cases nationwide.

Health officials are closely monitoring the situation as TB remains a notifiable infectious disease requiring early detection and treatment.

Sabah Records Highest Number
Sabah reported the highest number of cases at 614. Selangor followed with 476 cases, while Sarawak recorded 257 and Johor 233.

Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya together logged 202 cases, highlighting continued urban transmission risks.

State Breakdown Across Malaysia

Other states also reported significant figures. Penang recorded 148 cases, Kedah 144, and Perak 127. Kelantan reported 96 cases, Pahang 81, and Terengganu 60.

Negeri Sembilan registered 58 cases, Melaka 42, Perlis 17, and Labuan 16. The nationwide distribution underscores the need for consistent monitoring across regions.

Advisory Ahead Of Festive Season
With long holidays approaching, the Ministry of Health has urged the public to remain cautious, particularly in crowded settings.

Authorities advised practising proper cough and sneeze etiquette and wearing face masks in busy areas to reduce transmission risks.

Symptoms And Early Screening
The ministry encouraged individuals experiencing prolonged cough, fever, loss of appetite, or unexplained weight loss to seek screening at the nearest health facility.

Early diagnosis and treatment are essential in preventing the spread of tuberculosis and reducing complications.

Shared Social Responsibility
In its statement, MOH emphasized that preventive measures reflect not only personal risk management but also social responsibility.

Protecting oneself, family members, and the broader community is crucial in controlling infectious diseases, especially during periods of increased travel and gatherings.

The rise to 2,571 tuberculosis cases by Week 5 of 2026 highlights the continued public health challenge posed by TB in Malaysia. With Sabah recording the highest number of cases, authorities are reinforcing preventive measures ahead of major holidays. For Indonesians and Singaporeans monitoring regional health trends, the update underscores the importance of early screening, community vigilance, and responsible health practices in controlling infectious diseases.
