Swift police action halts suspected drug deal following public tip-off in Batam
A late-evening police operation in Batam has disrupted a suspected drug distribution attempt, highlighting the growing role of community reports in combating narcotics crimes in urban neighborhoods.
Tip-Off Sparks Police Surveillance
Officers from Subdirectorate II of the Riau Islands Police Narcotics Directorate successfully foiled an attempted marijuana distribution in Tanjung Uma, Batam City. The operation resulted in the arrest of two men identified by their initials, AD and TH, along with the seizure of approximately 300 grams of marijuana.
The case unfolded after police received a public tip on Sunday, January 25, 2026, at around 5:00 p.m. local time. The information pointed to suspicious activities believed to be linked to marijuana storage and transactions in the Tanjung Uma area.
Suspicious Activity Near Football Field
Following the report, the operational team immediately conducted field surveillance. Investigators observed two men displaying suspicious behavior around the Tanjung Uma football field, a public area frequently used by local residents.
Kasubdit II Ditresnarkoba Polda Kepri AKBP Ruslaeni confirmed that the men became the focus of the investigation after their movements raised strong suspicion during monitoring.
Arrest Made During Evening Operation
At approximately 8:30 p.m., officers moved in and secured the suspects at the football field located in RT 01 RW 06, Tanjung Uma Subdistrict, Lubuk Baja District, Batam City. Both suspects were arrested without resistance during the operation.
A search conducted at the scene revealed a black plastic package containing marijuana weighing about 300 grams. The drugs were found in the possession of suspect AD at the time of arrest.
Drugs Transported Using Motorcycle
Initial questioning revealed that the marijuana had been transported by suspect TH using a blue Honda Beat motorcycle. The illegal substance was concealed beneath the motorcycle’s dashboard to avoid detection before being handed over to AD.
Police believe the method indicates prior planning and possible involvement in a wider distribution network operating in the area.
Ongoing Investigation Into Wider Network
Both suspects and all seized evidence were immediately taken to the Riau Islands Police Narcotics Directorate for further investigation. Authorities are now working to trace the source of the drugs and identify any additional parties connected to the operation.
AKBP Ruslaeni emphasized that investigators are continuing to develop the case to dismantle any broader narcotics network linked to the suspects.
Public Urged to Stay Vigilant
The Riau Islands Police reaffirmed their commitment to eradicating drug distribution across the province. Authorities also urged residents to actively report suspected drug-related activities, stressing that public cooperation remains a key factor in successful enforcement efforts.
This case underscores the persistent threat of narcotics circulation in densely populated urban areas like Batam, while also demonstrating the effectiveness of cooperation between law enforcement and the community. Continued vigilance is critical, especially in border regions that are closely watched by both Indonesian and Singaporean authorities due to cross-border security and public health concerns.
