Two-day operation exposes ongoing efforts to smuggle drugs into Batam correctional facility
Heightened vigilance inside correctional facilities remains critical as drug syndicates continue exploiting unconventional methods to breach prison security.
Repeated Smuggling Attempts Detected
Officers at Batam Class IIA Correctional Facility successfully foiled two separate narcotics smuggling attempts over two days, on Friday night (January 16) and Saturday morning (January 17). The incidents highlighted persistent efforts by external actors to infiltrate illegal drugs into the prison compound.
Tossing Method Used by Suspects
According to Batam Prison Head of Security Andre Silalah, the perpetrators used a throw-in method, hurling drug packages from outside the prison walls into internal areas. The first attempt was detected by officers stationed at Guard Tower 3, who noticed two unidentified individuals on a motorcycle throwing a suspicious package toward the Block D yard.
Dangerous Contents Recovered
Upon inspection, officers discovered a plastic package weighted with stones. The bundle contained white powder and pills suspected to be methamphetamine and ecstasy. The find immediately raised concerns over coordinated smuggling attempts targeting inmates inside the facility.
Second Discovery During Inmate Work Activity
A second interception occurred during routine supervision of inmate work activities near the prison garden area. Officers found two suspicious packages wrapped in aluminum foil. Inside were white powder believed to be narcotics, along with several packets of dried marijuana.
Coordination With Police Intensified
Following both discoveries, prison authorities coordinated swiftly with the Barelang Police Narcotics Unit. Initial examinations were conducted, statements were collected from officers on duty, and all evidence was secured for further investigation to identify those responsible for the attempted smuggling.
Commitment to Tighter Surveillance
Batam Class IIA Prison Head Yosafat Rizanto emphasized that the successful interceptions reflect the institution’s firm commitment to combating narcotics circulation within correctional facilities. He stated that surveillance will be further tightened, especially at vulnerable perimeter points, alongside strengthened coordination with law enforcement agencies.
The foiled smuggling attempts underscore the evolving tactics of drug networks and the importance of strict prison oversight. For Indonesia and neighboring Singapore, the case highlights shared regional challenges in combating cross-border narcotics threats and reinforces the need for continued cooperation in law enforcement and prison security.
