Once notorious mall marks new chapter as packed church services debut

A building long associated with vice and controversy has taken on a dramatically different identity, signaling a broader shift in Orchard Road’s social landscape.

A Symbolic Shift in Orchard Towers
Once infamous for its nightlife scene and sex trade activities, Orchard Towers has entered a new phase with the arrival of Cornerstone Community Church. The church held its first weekend services at the mall on Dec. 13 and 14, marking a symbolic transformation for the building that once drew public safety concerns.

A Major Investment in a Controversial Landmark

Cornerstone Community Church purchased more than 19,000 square feet of retail space on the fourth floor of Orchard Towers in January for S$54.5 million. The space spans six units, including one that was originally a cinema before being converted into a disco pub during the mall’s nightlife era.

Extensive Renovation and Modern Design
According to church co-founder Pastor Yang Tuck Yoong, the church spent approximately S$5 million renovating the former nightclub spaces, along with another S$3 million on audio-visual systems and interior design. The refurbished area now features clean decor, warm lighting, and a welcoming layout suited for worship services.

Packed Inaugural Services
Photos and videos shared by the church on Facebook on Dec. 15 showed full services, with ushers guiding worshippers through the new space. Pastor Yang described both services as “packed,” noting that even the overflow areas were filled, reflecting strong attendance and interest from the congregation.

Faith and Purpose in a Reclaimed Space
In videos shared after the services, Pastor Yang emphasized the spiritual significance of the location. He said the presence of God was “tangible” in the building, adding that while a structure is simply a building, consecration transforms it into a house of prayer and purpose.

Orchard Towers’ Broader Rehabilitation
The church’s arrival follows government action announced in 2022 to stop renewing and granting public entertainment licenses at Orchard Towers from May 2023. Authorities cited persistent law and order issues, prompting nightclubs and massage parlors to shut down. These businesses have since been replaced by eateries, tuition centers, and now religious institutions.

The transformation of Orchard Towers reflects a wider urban and social reset in Singapore, where policy, community investment, and changing values intersect. For Indonesians and Singaporeans alike, the shift highlights how controversial spaces can be repurposed into centers of community, faith, and renewed public trust.
