Largest electric bus rollout marks milestone in Singapore’s land transport decarbonization drive
Singapore’s push toward cleaner, safer, and smarter public transport is accelerating, with a major investment set to reshape daily commutes across the island from 2026 onward.
Major Investment in Electric Mobility
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded six contracts for 660 new electric public buses at a total cost of S$322.2 million, marking one of Singapore’s largest commitments to decarbonizing land transport. The fleet includes 360 single deck and 300 double deck electric buses, all scheduled for delivery from the end of 2026 and progressively deployed for passenger service.
First Large-Scale Electric Double Deck Fleet
This marks Singapore’s first large scale purchase of electric double deck buses. Each double decker features a three door, two staircase design, allowing upper deck commuters to disembark via the rear staircase. According to LTA, this layout improves boarding efficiency and shortens dwell times at bus stops, enhancing the overall commuter experience.
Suppliers and Contract Breakdown
The contracts were awarded to four tenderers following a two envelope evaluation process assessing quality before price. ST Engineering Mobility Services will supply 250 buses valued at S$114.7 million, BYD will deliver 210 buses worth S$105.8 million, Cycle and Carriage Automotive with Zhongtong Bus will provide 100 double deck buses costing S$57.8 million, while Yutong will supply 100 single deck buses valued at S$43.9 million. The contracts also include an option for LTA to procure 50 additional electric buses if needed.
Smarter, Safer Bus Features
Both single and double deck electric buses will feature upgraded passenger information systems with audio and visual journey updates. Safety enhancements include onboard surveillance cameras, collision warning systems, object detection cameras, and driver anti fatigue monitoring. The rear of each bus will also display color electronic signals to alert surrounding road users of the driver’s intentions, a feature recommended by the Bus Safety Tripartite Taskforce formed in July 2024.
Improved Range and Performance
LTA stated that the new single deck electric buses can travel at least 310 kilometers per charge, while the double deck models can cover at least 240 kilometers. Improved battery technology and capacity ensure these buses meet operational demands while reducing reliance on diesel powered vehicles reaching the end of their statutory lifespan.
Charging Infrastructure and Long-Term Goals
To support the expanded electric fleet, LTA has called tenders to install electric vehicle charging systems at Mandai Bus Depot and future integrated transport hubs in Kallang, Beauty World, and Tampines North. Since 2020, all newly purchased public buses have been either diesel hybrid or fully electric. Once the 660 buses are deployed, Singapore will operate 1,140 electric buses out of a total fleet of 5,841 as of end 2024.
Toward a Greener Public Transport System
LTA said electric buses are expected to make up half of Singapore’s public bus fleet by 2030, with more tenders planned in the coming years. The initiative reinforces Singapore’s broader sustainability goals while improving commuter safety, efficiency, and comfort.
This landmark rollout reflects Singapore’s determination to lead in sustainable urban mobility, setting a regional benchmark that resonates strongly with both Singaporeans and Indonesians navigating increasingly interconnected and climate conscious cities across Southeast Asia.
