An online post published in September 2025 alleging workplace bullying at the Law Society of Singapore has triggered an ongoing independent investigation. The probe was commissioned by the organization’s audit committee and is being conducted by TSMP Law Corporation, according to The Straits Times. The allegations surfaced amid a turbulent year marked by unusually high staff turnover.

Wave of Resignations Raises Red Flags
About one third of the Law Society’s more than 70 full-time employees resigned in 2025, The Straits Times understands. A chief executive reportedly left less than four months into the role, while the departure of a long-serving senior executive prompted further exits. At one point, the human resources department was left without staff, intensifying concerns over internal management.

Scope and Progress of the Probe

TSMP’s joint managing partner, Senior Counsel Thio Shen Yi, confirmed that a progress report has been submitted to the audit committee but declined to elaborate. Interviews with former and current employees were conducted between October and December, and several other operational issues reportedly emerged during the investigation.

Spending and Oversight Concerns
Among the issues flagged were allegations of excessive spending on overseas trips. Under the Law Society’s protocol, expenses below $50,000 do not require approval from the full 21-member council and instead need only the endorsement of the eight-member executive committee. Several council members reportedly raised concerns about these financial claims during internal discussions.

Workplace Culture Under Scrutiny
Many requesting anonymity for fear of reprisal, described a demanding work culture marked by constant availability expectations. Staff said they received incessant messages via WhatsApp, including on weekends and while on leave, and were sometimes tasked with duties outside their job scope, such as parking cars or managing flight bookings. Some also alleged being spoken to in condescending tones in front of colleagues and feared termination if tasks were not completed swiftly.

Leadership Changes Add to Unease
The controversy unfolds alongside leadership shifts within the Law Society. In November, Mr Dinesh Singh Dhillon, a ministerial appointee, was announced as president for 2026. Current president Ms Lisa Sam will remain on the council, as will Mr Samuel Chacko, who lost the internal election to Mr Dhillon. While internal voting for office-bearers is routine, Mr Dhillon’s appointment reportedly caused disquiet among some members, reflecting deeper divisions within the organization.
