New eGates and QR scanners aim to ease congestion at Johor checkpoints

Daily cross-border travel between Johor and Singapore is set for a major upgrade as Malaysia pushes ahead with faster, smarter immigration systems to ease congestion and improve reliability.

Capacity Boost at Key Entry Points
Malaysia’s Ministry of Home Affairs announced a comprehensive upgrade of immigration facilities at the Sultan Iskandar Building in Johor Bahru and the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex in Iskandar Puteri. By Dec 31, 40 additional National Integrated Immigration System eGate units and 145 MyNIISe QR code scanners will be installed across motorcycle, car, and pedestrian lanes, significantly expanding processing capacity.

Faster Processing During Peak Hours

The ministry said the new installations are expected to double immigration processing capacity at both checkpoints, particularly benefiting motorcycle lanes, which record the highest daily traffic volumes. These improvements target peak-hour congestion that affects tens of thousands of daily commuters between Malaysia and Singapore.

Strengthening Digital Immigration Systems
Upgrades to the MyIMMs and NIISe systems are being accelerated through close coordination with technology vendors. According to the ministry’s Dec 15 statement, the focus is on improving system stability, responsiveness, and scalability to accommodate rising cross-border travel demand.

Improved Connectivity and System Integration
To prevent disruptions during busy periods, internet connectivity at critical locations is being strengthened in collaboration with telecommunications providers. The integration of the MyNIISe and MyBorderPass systems will further streamline immigration clearance for both local and foreign travelers, enabling smoother and more efficient border movement.

Task Force Oversight and Public Adoption
A special task force has been formed to monitor upgrade progress on a weekly basis until all systems are fully operational by the end of December. Malaysian citizens are also encouraged to download and use the MyNIISe app and automated eGate lanes, which help optimize traffic flow and reduce manual processing bottlenecks.

Addressing Early Challenges and Expanding Access
Following the rollout of MyNIISe on Sept 22, users reported initial delays and system lag. The ministry acknowledged these issues and confirmed that immediate and medium-term fixes are underway. MyNIISe allows travelers to use personal QR codes instead of passport stamping and is currently available to travelers from 63 countries for entry and 71 countries for departure under a trial running until Feb 28, 2026. The system will later expand to major international airports, including Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Kuching, and Kota Kinabalu.

The accelerated upgrades reflect Malaysia’s commitment to modernizing border management as cross-border movement intensifies. With Johor-Singapore crossings among Southeast Asia’s busiest, smoother immigration processes will support economic activity, reduce commuter stress, and strengthen regional connectivity for Indonesians, Singaporeans, and the wider ASEAN travel network.
