Singapore authorities seize vape device and 849 heat sticks in airport security operation.

Singapore’s tough stance on e-vaporisers was reinforced once again when airport officers intercepted a traveller attempting to bring prohibited vape items into the country. The swift action highlights ongoing efforts to protect public health and strengthen border security.

ICA Intercepts Prohibited Vape Products
The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority stopped a male Japanese traveller at Changi Airport Terminal 1 on November 30 after instructing him to undergo additional baggage checks. Officers first asked whether he had items to declare, but he denied carrying anything of concern.

Scanned Images Reveal Suspicious Anomalies

Despite his response, image scans raised suspicion. ICA officers noticed irregularities that prompted a thorough manual inspection of his luggage. The check uncovered one e-vaporiser and 849 heat sticks concealed among his belongings.

Understanding the Heat Stick Devices
Heat sticks are tobacco-filled cartridges inserted into battery-powered devices that warm the tobacco to produce nicotine-containing aerosol. Although they differ from combustible cigarettes, these products remain tightly regulated and prohibited in Singapore.

Case Referred for Further Investigation
Following the discovery, ICA referred the traveller to the Health Sciences Authority for further investigation into the attempted import of controlled products. Singapore maintains strict laws prohibiting the possession, purchase, and use of e-vaporisers.

ICA Reinforces Its Border Security Commitment
In a statement on December 11, ICA emphasized that border security is a key pillar of national efforts to combat illegal e-vaporiser activities. The agency reiterated its commitment to safeguarding Singapore’s borders and preventing harmful substances from entering the country.

Strengthening National Safety Through Vigilance
The ICA’s swift detection of vape products reinforces how Singapore’s border controls remain a crucial safeguard for public health and community wellbeing. Incidents like this highlight the importance of strong enforcement measures that protect residents, travellers, and the wider region from the risks associated with illegal tobacco alternatives.
