A faster, modern electric rail link promises smoother travel across Peninsular Malaysia
The launch of Malaysia’s long-awaited Electric Train Service marks a major milestone in regional connectivity.
A New Era of Rail Travel
Malaysia is preparing to transform long-distance travel with the introduction of its Electric Train Service, which officially begins operation on December 12, 2025. The new service will reduce the Johor Bahru to Kuala Lumpur train journey to just 3.5 hours, cutting current diesel train or bus travel times by nearly half. The improved speed and convenience signal a new era for both domestic commuters and international travelers.
Official Launch Led by Malaysia’s King
The country will inaugurate the new route on December 11 in Johor Bahru, led by Ibrahim ibni Iskandar, the King of Malaysia and Sultan of Johor. His presence underscores the national significance of the project, which has been in development for more than a decade.
A Boost for Singapore–Malaysia Travel
The electric train’s debut is expected to ease travel for tourists coming from Singapore. Visitors will be able to cross the border into Johor Bahru before continuing their journey to Kuala Lumpur by rail. Previously, the same route took 7.5 to 8 hours on diesel-powered trains. The ETS will make the trip not only faster but more reliable for those heading to Malaysia’s capital.
Expansion Plans Toward Padang Besar
According to The Straits Times, Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke confirmed that the first phase will focus on Johor Bahru to Kuala Lumpur operations. Longer routes such as services to Butterworth and Padang Besar will be added in subsequent stages. Loke explained that long-distance routes allow only two trips daily, while the shorter Johor Bahru–Kuala Lumpur segment enables more frequent service.
Years of Planning and Construction
Travel and Leisure reported that the ETS trains can reach speeds of up to 140 km per hour. The system’s initial operations began in August 2025 with services from KL Sentral to Kluang. The national railway operator Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad first announced the project in 2011, with construction beginning in 2016 across key towns including Johor Bahru, Segamat, Kluang, and Kulai. The new network enhances mobility between major urban centers on the peninsula.
Benefits for Locals and Tourists
While the ETS primarily aims to improve connectivity for Malaysian residents, its impact extends beyond domestic travel. Shorter and more comfortable journeys will make cross-border trips from Singapore more appealing, supporting tourism and strengthening people-to-people connections across the region.
The improved rail link is set to reshape travel patterns as Singaporeans and Indonesians continue exploring seamless transport options within Southeast Asia. Faster travel times, modern infrastructure, and phased route expansions could set the stage for more integrated regional mobility.
