Early warning highlights tide surge threat across multiple coastal zones in Riau Islands.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency has issued an early warning for potential coastal flooding across the Riau Islands as astronomical factors intensify sea levels in early December.
BMKG Warns of Elevated Sea Levels Across Kepri
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency through its Hang Nadim Batam Station has formally announced a coastal flooding risk expected from December 4 to 13, 2025. The alert was issued on November 29, 2025 as monitoring showed a significant rise in tide levels across the province.
Astronomical Phenomena Driving Tide Surges
BMKG explained that the Perigee Phase, when the Moon reaches its closest distance to Earth, will coincide with the Full Moon occurring on December 4. These combined phenomena are known to elevate seawater levels, increasing the likelihood of tidal flooding in coastal communities.
Areas Placed Under Heightened Watch
Based on water level data and tidal predictions, several regions in the Riau Islands are categorized as at risk. In Batam, the affected areas include Batu Aji, Batu Ampar, Sekupang, and Nongsa. Lingga’s Singkep Barat, Singkep Pesisir, and Senayang are also expected to experience unusually high tides.
Further alerts cover Karimun’s Kundur Barat, Karimun, and Meral, while Bintan’s Bintan Utara, Teluk Sebong, and Bintan Timur have been marked for potential impacts. Tanjungpinang’s coastal subdistricts, including Tanjungpinang Kota, Tanjungpinang Barat, and Bukit Bestari, are similarly listed.
Natuna Among the Most Vulnerable Zones
In the Natuna region, coastal flooding is anticipated in Pulau Bunguran, Serasan, Serasan Timur, Midai, Subi, and Pulau Laut. These islands have been flagged due to their direct exposure to tide surges amplified by the December astronomical events.
Potential Disruptions to Daily and Economic Activity
BMKG noted that coastal flooding may disrupt key activities such as port loading and unloading, shoreline housing, salt farming, and inland fisheries. Communities dependent on coastal access are urged to adjust schedules and prepare for temporary disturbances throughout the warning period.
Officials Urge Residents to Stay Updated
The official warning was signed by Head of Hang Nadim Meteorological Station Ramlan, S.Si, M.Si, and forecaster Fitri Annisa, S.Tr, using tidal data from the Indonesian Navy Hydro-Oceanographic Center. Authorities strongly encourage residents to monitor BMKG’s official channels for real-time updates on tides and weather conditions.
Proactive Monitoring Essential for Coastal Safety
As Kepri’s geography makes it highly sensitive to tidal fluctuations, timely awareness and preparedness are essential. BMKG’s early alert aims to give residents, workers, and port operators enough time to mitigate risks during the December high tide cycle.
The coastal flooding warning serves as a crucial reminder of how natural phenomena can directly affect daily life across the Riau Islands and the wider region. Both Indonesian and Singaporean communities that rely on maritime links with Kepri should stay informed, ensuring that transportation, trade, and coastal activities can continue safely through the period of heightened tidal risk.
