Joint railway project quietly progresses despite Gaza conflict and complex regional politics

The United Arab Emirates and Israel are moving forward with an ambitious railway project linking the two countries, even as the Gaza conflict continues to create uncertainty across the region.

Project Moves into Advanced Preparation

Israeli media outlets reported that the UAE–Israel railway link has entered its preparation phase, signaling renewed momentum in a project that survived two years of war in Gaza. Israeli Transport Minister Miri Regev recently traveled to Abu Dhabi to strengthen cooperation and accelerate planning for the cross-border railway. Her visit, made quietly amid rising military tensions, underscores the strategic importance both sides place on the initiative.

A New Commercial Route Connecting Asia and Europe

The railway is designed to support a major trade corridor linking India, the Gulf and Europe. Under the envisioned route, goods from India’s Mundra Port would arrive in the UAE by sea, then travel by high-speed rail through the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Jordan before reaching Haifa. From there, shipments would move onward to European markets. The new route aims to bypass bureaucratic choke points such as the Allenby Bridge crossing, which currently complicates trade flows from Jordan into the West Bank and Israel.

Part of the Wider IMEC Strategy

The project forms part of the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), first conceptualized by the United States in 2018. Recent reports from Channel 15, Yedioth Ahronoth and i24 News indicate that much of the supporting infrastructure is already in place, forming the backbone of what some media outlets call the “Peace Railway.” According to independent outlet The Cradle, the UAE and Israel used the Dubai Airshow as cover for high-level meetings and technical evaluations to advance the plan.

Beyond Rail: A Multi-Utility Corridor

The corridor is expected to serve multiple functions beyond freight transport. Reports suggest it may eventually carry communication cables, energy pipelines and transmission lines. This would create a broader logistics and infrastructure network linking South Asia, the Arabian Peninsula and the Mediterranean—a strategic asset amid shifting global supply chains.

Competition and Regional Alternatives

France and Turkey previously proposed an alternative northern route that would run through Jordan into Syria and Lebanon, bypassing Israel entirely. But senior railway officials from Israel and the UAE appear committed to the original alignment. Both sides have agreed to establish a joint administrative body that will oversee transit operations and complete the remaining segments of the line.

Future Potential Depends on Regional Agreements

Israeli sources cited by Yedioth Ahronoth claim the corridor could eventually move perishable goods into Israel within hours, contingent on final agreements with Saudi Arabia and regulatory approval from the UAE. The project’s success will rely heavily on political stability, cross-border security guarantees and continued mediation among regional powers.

The UAE–Israel railway initiative reflects a broader shift toward economic integration in the Middle East, even amid ongoing conflict. Its development carries major implications for Indonesia, Singapore and the wider Asia–Europe trade landscape, offering a potentially faster route for goods traveling across continents. The project’s progress will remain a key indicator of how regional partnerships evolve in the years ahead.
