Morning technical failure halts KL monorail, forcing emergency evacuation on elevated tracks.

A stalled monorail during Kuala Lumpur’s rush hour left 373 passengers stranded and triggered a rare emergency evacuation along an elevated track, raising renewed concerns about the city’s transit reliability.

Power Failure Halts Train Between Stations

At around 8.50am on 20 November, a Kuala Lumpur monorail train stalled between the Medan Tuanku and Chow Kit stations due to a power supply issue. The malfunction left 373 passengers trapped mid-route during peak commuting hours.

The Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at 9.39am, confirming that the operator, Rapid Rail, was already coordinating evacuation efforts and that the situation was under control.

Emergency Evacuation on Elevated Tracks

Passengers were evacuated through an unusual but necessary method: crossing to another train on the opposite track via a narrow gangway. Videos circulating online showed staff manually forcing open the train doors while assisting commuters across the elevated structure.

This coordinated effort between monorail staff and emergency responders ensured all passengers were safely transferred to the adjacent train.

One Passenger Fainted During the Incident

A 58-year-old woman fainted during the evacuation but regained consciousness after receiving on-site first aid. She was later handed over to the Health Ministry for further assessment and safely escorted home by family members, according to Rapid KL.

Rapid KL: Repairs Completed, Services Restored

Rapid KL stated that repairs to the technical malfunction at Medan Tuanku were completed by late morning. The stalled train was subsequently towed to the depot for inspection.

Full monorail services resumed at approximately 11.30am, ending more than two hours of delays that affected commuters across the city. Rapid KL issued an apology for the disruption and thanked passengers for their patience.

Renewed Concerns Over Transit Reliability

While no serious injuries occurred, the incident highlights ongoing concerns about the reliability of Kuala Lumpur’s aging monorail system. The dramatic evacuation, widely circulated on social media, has led some commuters to call for more frequent maintenance checks and upgraded safety measures.

As KL continues to expand its transit network, ensuring consistent operational safety remains a key priority for both residents and cross-border travelers who rely on the system daily.

The KL monorail malfunction underscores the importance of robust maintenance and emergency readiness across Malaysia’s public transport infrastructure. With rising intercity mobility between Malaysia and Singapore, improving transit reliability will be crucial to supporting safer and more efficient regional travel.
