New facility strengthens regional AI innovation, talent development, and culturally aware large language models.
Google DeepMind has officially opened its first Southeast Asian research lab in Singapore, marking a major step in the region’s advancement in artificial intelligence.
A Strategic Expansion Into Southeast Asia
Google DeepMind launched its new research lab on Nov 19 at its APAC headquarters in Singapore, marking the organisation’s first facility in Southeast Asia. The move reinforces Singapore’s role as a global AI hub, complementing DeepMind’s existing labs in London, India, and Japan. Chief operating officer Lila Ibrahim said Singapore’s forward-looking digital policies and strong research ecosystem make it an “ideal place” for the lab.
Strengthening Regional Research and Collaboration
Operations have already begun, with ongoing hiring for research scientists, software engineers, and AI impact specialists. The lab will focus on collaborative work with government agencies, academic institutions, businesses, and civil society. Representatives from the Economic Development Board (EDB) and AI Singapore (AISG) attended the launch, underscoring national support for the initiative.

Driving Innovation in Education, Healthcare, and Multimodal AI
Although still refining its research agenda, DeepMind noted strong interest in education, learning, and healthcare. Job listings include multimodal generative AI research roles and engineering positions focused on medical AI. Ibrahim also confirmed that Singapore-based teams contributed to the development of Gemini 3, Google’s latest multimodal AI model capable of generating text, audio, images, and video.
Building AI Models That Understand Southeast Asia
A key objective of the new lab is to improve AI’s understanding of Southeast Asia’s cultural and linguistic diversity. Google DeepMind has partnered with AI Singapore to train models on regional data, including work on SEA-LION, a multilingual LLM tailored to Southeast Asian languages. Ibrahim said this localisation effort reduces barriers to AI adoption and makes next-generation models more inclusive and representative.
Supporting Singapore’s National AI Strategy 2.0
The launch aligns with Singapore’s National AI Strategy 2.0 (NAIS 2.0), which aims to triple the number of AI practitioners to 15,000 and position the country as a leader in impactful AI domains. According to EDB, the collaboration with DeepMind will give Singapore’s talent pool access to world-class tools and research opportunities. The nation has attracted other global AI players in recent years, including OpenAI, Microsoft, and Workato.

A Growing AI Ecosystem Backed by Rising Investment
Private AI funding in Singapore surged 55% from late 2024 to early 2025, according to a Google–Temasek–Bain report. As multinational companies expand AI operations in the region, DeepMind’s presence is expected to accelerate innovation and contribute to a more vibrant and competitive ecosystem across Southeast Asia.
DeepMind’s new Singapore research lab marks a pivotal moment for regional AI development. By combining world-class expertise with Southeast Asia’s rich cultural context, the facility is set to advance cutting-edge AI research, strengthen talent pipelines, and deepen collaboration across public and private sectors—benefiting both Singaporeans and Southeast Asian communities as a whole.
