Over 200 agricultural imports — from beef to bananas — now tariff-free to ease food prices.

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order eliminating tariffs on a wide range of agricultural imports, aiming to curb rising food prices that have fuelled public frustration over inflation in the United States.

More Than 200 Food Products Now Tariff-Free

Announced on Nov 14, the executive order removes tariffs on over 200 imported food items, including beef, coffee, bananas, tea, tomatoes, spices, and other tropical produce. According to the White House, many of these products are not produced in sufficient quantities domestically, making tariff removal a direct way to ease consumer prices.

White House: Price Relief Expected Soon

The move comes amid persistent inflation, with beef prices rising 12.9 per cent and coffee climbing 18.9 per cent as of September 2025. Banana prices also increased 6.9 per cent over the same period. Trump said the tariff cuts, particularly on essentials like coffee should help lower prices “very soon.”

Reversal of Earlier Tariff Stance

The sudden directive marks a shift from Trump’s previous position that tariffs were crucial for national security and protecting American jobs. The latest order states that certain agricultural imports are no longer subject to reciprocal duties due to “substantial progress” in international trade negotiations.

Industry Groups Welcome the Policy Change

Food industry organisations responded positively. The US Chamber of Commerce praised the removal of tariffs on key household staples, saying it will help lighten financial pressure on families. The Food Marketing Institute (FMI) also called the decision essential for maintaining supply stability and keeping prices affordable amid complex supply chain challenges involving weather, labour, energy, and transport costs.

Why These Products Matter

Industry groups emphasised that many of the tariff-exempted items such as coffee, bananas, and most tropical fruits cannot be produced in the United States due to geographic limitations. Lowering import costs is expected to improve supply consistency and reduce retail price volatility nationwide.

Effective Immediately Across the US

The tariff exemptions apply to agricultural goods entering the country or released from bonded warehouses beginning 12:01am Eastern Time on Thursday. Products previously subject to 10 per cent general tariffs are now fully exempt under the new directive.

The sweeping tariff removal reflects the administration’s urgent attempt to counter rising living costs. For consumers and businesses across the US and the wider region, including trading partners like Indonesia and Singapore, the policy signals shifting economic priorities and potential changes in agricultural trade flows.
