The BJB 3.0 initiative, inspired by the Johor royal family, aims to enhance housing, heritage, and youth development

The Johor government will extend its Bangsa Johor Bahagia (BJB) community development programme to Flat Larkin in Johor Bahru and Flat Temenggong in Kulai, focusing on improving the quality of life and fostering community resilience. The latest phase, BJB 3.0, continues the royal-backed initiative’s mission to strengthen socio-economic growth and rejuvenate public housing areas.

Heritage and Community Spirit at the Core

Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the expansion was presented to Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia, during a meeting at Istana Bukit Serene on November 10. He explained that BJB 3.0 will embrace a heritage-focused theme to address the complex challenges of stratified housing while instilling a renewed sense of unity and progress.

Empowering Residents and Youth

According to Onn Hafiz, the programme will not only upgrade aging housing infrastructure but also empower residents through socio-economic development and youth engagement. “It will incorporate initiatives to improve livelihoods, create youth development opportunities, and build platforms for community adaptation and growth,” he said in a Facebook post.

Collaborative Implementation Across Johor

The BJB 3.0 rollout will be carried out in partnership with the Johor Bahru City Council, Kulai Municipal Council, and the Johor State Housing Development Corporation. The programme’s collaborative framework brings together local authorities, academic institutions, and community organizations to ensure sustainability and inclusivity.

Royal and Institutional Backing

The Bangsa Johor Bahagia initiative was founded by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, and Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, under the patronage of the Sultan Ibrahim Johor Foundation and the Raja Zarith Sofiah Foundation. Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is a key collaborator, supporting the project with research and community engagement expertise.

From Pilot Success to Statewide Expansion

Since its inception in 2019 with BJB 1.0 at Kangkar Pulai New Town Apartment, the programme has successfully revitalized older flats and strengthened neighborhood bonds. Its second phase, BJB 2.0, expanded to Plentong Utama Flats earlier in 2025, delivering tangible improvements in housing quality and community well-being. The latest phase marks a new milestone in Johor’s vision for holistic urban renewal.

The expansion of Bangsa Johor Bahagia 3.0 to Larkin and Kulai reflects Johor’s commitment to inclusive development rooted in heritage and community pride. By combining royal leadership, local collaboration, and social innovation, the state continues to pioneer sustainable urban revitalization for the people of Johor.
