Onn Hafiz highlights the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone as a model of shared prosperity through mutual strengths and cooperation

Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi reaffirmed that Johor and Singapore’s success lies not in rivalry but in partnership. Speaking on the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), he emphasized that collaboration between the two economies is paving the way for stronger, more resilient regional growth.

Complementary Strengths Across the Causeway

Onn Hafiz underscored that Johor and Singapore each bring distinct competitive advantages to the partnership. Johor serves as a hub for industrial expansion, renewable energy, and talent development, while Singapore contributes its strengths in finance, trade, and technology.

“Aligning these strengths under the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone creates an ecosystem that amplifies both nations’ global competitiveness,” he said. “Our success lies not in rivalry, but in collaboration.”

Accelerating Investment and Market Access

According to Onn Hafiz, the JS-SEZ will act as a catalyst for faster investment approvals, reduced trade barriers, and improved access to global markets. This, he said, will translate into high-quality job creation for both Malaysians and Singaporeans.

By streamlining cross-border processes, the initiative aims to strengthen supply chain resilience and make the southern region of the Malay Peninsula a magnet for foreign investors seeking efficient regional connectivity.

Meeting of Minds: Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Onn Hafiz shared these views after hosting Singapore’s National Development Minister Chee Hong Tat and his delegation at his official residence, Saujana Johor Bahru. The meeting reinforced both governments’ shared commitment to strengthening economic cooperation through the JS-SEZ framework.

He expressed Johor’s appreciation for Singapore’s openness in pursuing deeper collaboration. “This special relationship reflects mutual trust and respect,” he noted. “It is a model for how neighbouring economies can achieve shared prosperity.”

A Shared Vision for the Region

The Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone is designed to facilitate joint development in manufacturing, logistics, green energy, and innovation sectors. It is part of a broader strategy to enhance regional integration under the Greater Southern Corridor, connecting Johor’s industrial base with Singapore’s global financial network.

Both governments believe that this approach will not only boost economic growth but also promote environmental sustainability and social resilience—key pillars of long-term prosperity.

Collaboration as the Future of ASEAN Growth

Onn Hafiz’s remarks echo a growing regional sentiment that collaboration, not competition, is key to ASEAN’s future. By leveraging each nation’s comparative advantages, partnerships like the JS-SEZ could redefine Southeast Asia’s role in global trade.

“May this special relationship continue to be strengthened for a more prosperous, resilient, and harmonious future for Johor and Singapore,” Onn Hafiz said.

The Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone represents a new phase of bilateral cooperation rooted in trust and shared ambition. As both sides align their strengths in industry, technology, and sustainability, the initiative stands as a blueprint for regional collaboration—showing that prosperity is greatest when neighbours grow together.
