Amazon restores services after a daylong cloud outage cripples websites, apps, and governments worldwide

A massive outage across Amazon Web Services (AWS) on Monday caused widespread disruptions to major websites, apps, and even government systems worldwide. The incident, traced to a technical failure in AWS’s US-East-1 region in northern Virginia, exposed the growing dependence of global digital infrastructure on a handful of tech giants — and the immense costs when one fails.

Widespread Internet Blackout

The outage began around 3:11 a.m. ET in Amazon’s main US-East-1 data center, one of its busiest regions. Within hours, over 11 million outage reports flooded Downdetector, affecting platforms from Zoom, Fortnite, and Canva to Snapchat, Robinhood, and Coinbase. Even government websites in the UK and Amazon’s own services, including Seller Central and internal warehouse systems, went offline.

The problem was later traced to a failure in AWS’s EC2 internal network and DNS system linked to DynamoDB, which manages vast amounts of web data. Although some users regained access by noon, errors persisted until the evening, when AWS confirmed that “all services returned to normal operations” around 6 p.m. ET.

Global Business Impact

The outage paralyzed digital operations across industries. Airlines such as United and Delta experienced booking disruptions, while Lloyds Bank and UK government sites were temporarily inaccessible. Inside Amazon warehouses, employees reported being told to stand by as internal tools went offline.

“The financial impact of this outage will easily reach into the hundreds of billions,” said Mehdi Daoudi, CEO of internet monitoring firm Catchpoint, citing global productivity loss and halted business operations. From logistics networks to online learning platforms, the ripple effects were immediate and severe.

Not a Cyberattack — But a Wake-Up Call

Amazon clarified that the outage was not the result of a cyberattack, but rather a technical failure within the EC2 network. Rob Jardin, Chief Digital Officer at NymVPN, noted that such incidents occur “when systems become overloaded or a key part of the network goes down.”

AWS’s dominance in the cloud sector — holding roughly 30% of the global market, ahead of Microsoft (20%) and Google (13%) — magnified the disruption’s reach. As cybersecurity expert Mike Chapple remarked, “When a major cloud provider sneezes, the internet catches a cold.”

A Fragile Digital Ecosystem

Critics and digital rights advocates say the event highlights the danger of over-centralization in cloud computing. “These disruptions are not just technical issues, they’re democratic failures,” said Corinne Cath-Speth of Article 19. “When one provider goes dark, media outlets, secure communication apps, and civic infrastructure collapse with it.”

Her statement underscores a growing global concern: that critical systems — from hospitals to financial services — are increasingly dependent on a few cloud providers, creating single points of failure in the digital ecosystem.

AWS Recovery and Industry Reactions

AWS has promised a detailed post-event report in the coming days. By late evening Monday, it confirmed that EC2 launch failures had stabilized and DNS services were fully restored. However, experts warned that the backlog of unprocessed data and delayed operations could take several more hours to normalize.

In the wake of similar outages — including Microsoft’s global downtime in July 2024 and Google Cloud’s June 2024 disruption — the incident reignites debates about redundancy and resilience in cloud computing. Competitors like Google have already used such events to promote parallel continuity systems to attract enterprise clients.

Monday’s AWS outage was a sobering reminder of how intertwined global life has become with cloud infrastructure. From financial markets to social media, one malfunction in a single data center can paralyze billions in economic activity. The recovery may be swift, but the lesson is clear: digital dependence on a few dominant providers leaves the modern internet more vulnerable than ever.
