Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim pledges to open Malaysia’s market to Pakistani beef and meat products as both nations seek broader cooperation in trade, technology, and halal development.

Malaysia is set to open its doors to Pakistan’s agricultural and livestock exports, including beef and other meat products worth up to US$200 million (RM840 million), as part of a new wave of bilateral cooperation announced during Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s official visit to Kuala Lumpur.

Strengthening Economic Cooperation

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced Malaysia’s readiness to facilitate imports of Pakistani meat, citing Pakistan’s competitive prices and expanding export potential. “Since you have assured us that the prices will be competitive, we will certainly do what is necessary to facilitate the meat export worth up to US$200 million,” Anwar said at a joint press conference with Shehbaz Sharif on October 7, 2025.

Anwar highlighted that this initiative forms part of broader efforts to deepen economic collaboration between Malaysia and Pakistan, focusing on agriculture, renewable energy, and defence cooperation. He added that the move also aligns with Malaysia’s ongoing efforts to diversify its food import sources and strengthen supply chain resilience amid global market uncertainties.

Expanding Beyond Agriculture

Beyond meat exports, Anwar and Shehbaz agreed to explore cooperation across multiple high-growth sectors, including science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), information and communications technology (ICT), technical and vocational education and training (TVET), digital innovation, and the semiconductor industry.

“Pakistan is among the Muslim countries which were clearly far ahead initially in these fields,” Anwar noted, expressing optimism that stability in Pakistan could revive opportunities for collaboration in innovation and advanced technology.

Reaffirming Longstanding Bilateral Relations

The visit marks Shehbaz’s first official trip to Malaysia since taking office in March 2024, reinforcing diplomatic ties that date back to 1957 — the year of Malaysia’s independence. Both leaders underscored the importance of balanced and sustainable economic ties, reaffirming commitments under the Malaysia–Pakistan Closer Economic Partnership Agreement (MPCEPA).

According to a joint statement, the two nations will focus on enhancing market access, simplifying business facilitation, and ensuring the effective use of existing trade frameworks to boost investment flows in both directions.

Halal Cooperation and Palm Oil Expansion

Anwar and Shehbaz also emphasised cooperation in the halal economy, recognising growing global demand for halal-certified products. The leaders agreed to strengthen mutual recognition of halal certification, share best practices, and improve halal food supply chains.

In a complementary move, Malaysia expressed its intention to expand palm oil exports to Pakistan, a vital input for Pakistan’s food processing and manufacturing sectors. Both nations pledged to maintain a stable, sustainable, and environmentally responsible supply chain in line with halal and green standards.

Sustainable Agriculture and Innovation

The joint statement also reaffirmed both nations’ commitment to sustainable agriculture, highlighting plans for joint research and innovation in eco-friendly production methods. With climate challenges affecting global food security, Malaysia and Pakistan aim to collaborate on technological solutions and knowledge exchange to improve agricultural productivity and sustainability.

Malaysia’s decision to facilitate up to US$200 million in Pakistani meat exports signals a new phase of economic partnership between the two Muslim-majority nations. Beyond trade, the strengthened collaboration in technology, halal industries, and sustainable agriculture positions Malaysia and Pakistan as complementary players in the evolving regional economy — blending shared cultural heritage with modern innovation and mutual economic growth.
