George Russell dominates Marina Bay to secure victory, while McLaren seals back-to-back team titles
Under the dazzling lights of the Marina Bay Street Circuit, Mercedes’ George Russell powered to victory at the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday (Oct 5), while McLaren celebrated a second consecutive constructors’ championship despite tensions between its drivers.
Russell Dominates from Pole
George Russell delivered a near-perfect performance for Mercedes, leading from start to finish at the Singapore Grand Prix. Crossing the line 5.4 seconds ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, the Briton claimed his second victory of the season. “It feels amazing,” said Russell. “We don’t really know where this performance came from, but really, really happy.”
McLaren’s Team Glory Amid Driver Tensions
McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri finished third and fourth respectively, earning enough points to clinch the 2025 constructors’ title for the second year in a row. Norris admitted it was a hard-fought race, saying, “Max didn’t make any mistakes. I gave it my all today, and we won as a team.” However, the celebration was dampened as Piastri expressed frustration after Norris forced his way past him at Turn 1, a move the stewards later ruled as a racing incident.
Verstappen Fights for Second
Reigning world champion Max Verstappen struggled to keep pace with Russell throughout the race. After an early pit stop strategy failed to yield an advantage, he held off Norris to secure second place. “I think second was the maximum result today,” Verstappen reflected. “The whole race was quite difficult, more difficult than I hoped for.”
Ferrari and Mercedes Battle Behind the Podium
Behind the leading trio, Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli took fifth place, followed by Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton, however, was later handed a five-second penalty for repeatedly leaving the track due to braking issues, dropping him from sixth to eighth and promoting Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso to seventh.
Points Finishers and Disqualifications
Haas driver Oliver Bearman finished ninth, while Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz — who started at the back after both Williams cars were disqualified from qualifying — rounded out the top ten. The incident highlighted once again how technical infractions continue to shape grid outcomes late in the season.
Championship Picture Tightens
The result narrows the gap in the drivers’ standings, with Piastri now only 22 points ahead of Norris. Verstappen remains 63 points behind Piastri with six races left, setting the stage for a thrilling season finish.
Russell’s commanding victory in Singapore reinforces Mercedes’ growing momentum, while McLaren’s constructors’ title cements its resurgence as a powerhouse in Formula 1. The Marina Bay showdown offered a spectacle of speed, strategy, and team rivalry — one that continues to captivate fans across Asia, from Singapore’s city streets to Indonesia’s motorsport enthusiasts.
