Batam to host 170 nations, strengthening its role as a global sport tourism hub

Batam is once again in the global spotlight as it prepares to host the 16th World Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Championship 2025, a major international event that will bring thousands of athletes, officials, and visitors to the city.

Batam Chosen as Host City

The World Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Federation (WBPF) has officially entrusted Batam to host the 16th World Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Championship 2025, scheduled for November 11–17, 2025, at Pacific Palace Hotel. The event will feature participation from 170 countries and more than 800 athletes, alongside coaches, officials, and family members, highlighting Batam’s readiness to compete as a sport tourism destination.

Strong Backing from National Leaders

Khairis, Chairman of the Indonesian Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation (PBFI) Kepri, emphasized that hosting the championship is an honor and a challenge. “We have previously hosted Asian and ASEAN championships. Now, at the world level, the responsibility is much greater,” he said. He added that Batam’s proven experience makes it the right choice for this global stage.

Local Government Commitment

Batam’s Head of Youth and Sports, Zulkarnain, welcomed the decision, calling it a milestone for the city’s international reputation. He emphasized that the event will not only showcase sportsmanship but also create opportunities for tourism and small businesses. Hotels, restaurants, and local attractions are expected to see a significant surge in visitors during the weeklong event.

Economic and Tourism Boost

The influx of international participants is projected to create a substantial multiplier effect. With thousands of visitors spending on accommodation, food, transport, and leisure, Batam’s economy is poised to benefit. According to PBFI Batam Chairman Deni Setiawan, this event will significantly stimulate local economic activity while boosting Batam’s image as a host of international sports.

Opportunities for Indonesian Athletes

Another major advantage is the guaranteed participation quota for six Indonesian athletes. Typically, competing at world championships requires high travel costs, but this time, local athletes can perform on home ground. “This is not just symbolic—it is a vital opportunity for our athletes to measure themselves against the world’s best,” said Amri, Secretary of PBFI Kepri.

Free Access for the Public

The championship will be open to the public, with matches running daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. WIB. Admission is free, allowing sports fans and the local community to experience world-class competition firsthand. The government has invited residents to actively support and cheer for the athletes, ensuring a vibrant atmosphere.

A Milestone for Sport Tourism

Beyond competition, the championship cements Batam’s position as a rising sport tourism hub in Southeast Asia. It is expected to leave lasting benefits by strengthening Indonesia’s global sporting profile while reinforcing Batam’s attractiveness to international visitors, including those from nearby Singapore.

The 16th World Bodybuilding Physique Sports Championship 2025 represents more than just a competition—it is a catalyst for Batam’s tourism, economy, and sports development. With thousands of international participants and spectators, the event underscores Batam’s potential to become a premier destination for sport tourism in Asia, while inspiring local athletes to achieve global recognition.
