New MOH initiative links Healthpoints to health insurance savings, rewarding active lifestyles
From September 18, Singapore residents aged 40 and above can offset MediShield Life premiums with discounts of up to $580 by redeeming Healthpoints earned through the Health Promotion Board’s Healthy 365 app.
A New Way to Save on Premiums
The Ministry of Health (MOH) announced the programme as part of a three-year pilot under Healthier SG, the national preventive health initiative. It allows MediShield Life policyholders aged 40 and above — including those with Integrated Shield Plans — to exchange Healthpoints for discounts at an enhanced rate.
Double the Value Conversion
Typically, 150 Healthpoints are worth $1. Under this scheme, the rate doubles to 150 Healthpoints for $2 when redeemed for MediShield Life premiums. Residents can use their accumulated Healthpoints at policy renewal, with discounts automatically applied.
Earning Healthpoints
Healthpoints are earned through lifestyle programmes and challenges on the Healthy 365 app, such as:
- Meeting weekly exercise and sleep goals
- Purchasing food and drinks with the Healthier Choice symbol
- Enrolling with a Healthier SG clinic and completing a health plan consultation
For example, someone who maintains 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity weekly for a year could save about $70 on premiums. Completing an initial Health Plan consultation at a Healthier SG clinic adds another $40 in discounts.
Maximum Redemption Limits
According to MOH, individuals can earn Healthpoints equivalent to $270 per year. With the higher MediShield Life conversion rate, this translates to a maximum of $540 in annual premium discounts. Over the course of the pilot, policyholders may save up to $580 in total if they maximize participation in eligible activities.
Promoting Preventive Health
Health Minister Ong Ye Kung highlighted the broader purpose of the initiative in a Facebook post, saying the objective is to “strengthen the reward for staying healthy.” He emphasized that preventive health lowers the risk of costly treatments later in life.
The new Healthpoints-to-premium scheme offers residents both financial and health incentives, reinforcing Singapore’s push toward preventive care. By linking lifestyle choices with tangible insurance savings, the initiative encourages individuals to take proactive steps in managing long-term well-being.
