23-year-old arrested after 4 a.m. collision; one officer injured, driver tests positive for alcohol

A 23-year-old Audi A6 driver was arrested in Johor Bahru after allegedly crashing into two police motorcycles at 4 a.m. on Jalan Johor Bahru–Air Hitam, testing positive for alcohol and triggering a DUI investigation.

Early-Morning Collision

According to Johor Bahru Utara police chief ACP Balveer Singh Mahindar Singh, the Audi was traveling from the Skudai direction when it allegedly went out of control and struck two parked Kawasaki EX250 motorcycles belonging to the Royal Malaysia Police Motorcycle Patrol Unit (URB) at Kilometre 8, Jalan Johor Bahru–Air Hitam.

Officers Assisting Traffic

At the time of impact, two officers—aged 29 and 36—were directing traffic at the scene. One sustained a leg injury and received treatment at Sultanah Aminah Hospital Johor Bahru; the other officer and the driver were unhurt.

Alcohol Test Positive, Drugs Negative

A breathalyser test indicated the driver had consumed alcohol, while an initial urine screen returned negative for drugs. Police said further investigations are underway to determine the full circumstances of the incident.

Suspect Remanded For Investigation

With court approval, the suspect has been remanded for two days, from September 7 to 8, to facilitate inquiries. The case is being probed under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, covering driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Heavy Penalties If Convicted

Section 44(1) carries severe penalties: 10 to 15 years’ imprisonment, a fine between RM50,000 and RM100,000, and a 10-year driving licence suspension. Authorities underscored that these penalties reflect the serious risks posed by impaired driving.

Public Help Sought

ACP Balveer Singh urged witnesses to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to contact investigating officer Inspector Noor Azlina Abdul Raof at 019-7432966 to assist the investigation.

The Johor Bahru crash underscores the dangers of impaired driving and the risks traffic officers face while safeguarding road users. Swift enforcement and community cooperation remain essential to deterring DUI incidents and protecting public safety across Malaysia’s busy corridors.
