Bakamla and Forestry Ministry intercept KM AAL Delima at Sagulung Dock, securing 443 logs

A joint operation between Indonesia’s Maritime Security Agency (Bakamla) and the Ministry of Forestry has thwarted an illegal timber smuggling attempt in Batam, seizing hundreds of undocumented logs at Sagulung Dock.

Suspicious Activity Triggers Operation

The bust occurred in the early hours of Saturday, September 6, 2025, following a public tip-off about suspicious unloading activity at Sagulung Dock. Witnesses reported logs being transferred from the vessel KM AAL Delima to trucks, prompting Bakamla to deploy KN Tanjung Datu-301 under the command of Colonel Rudi Endratmoko.

Findings Onboard KM AAL Delima

Upon inspection, the joint team discovered 99 Meranti logs and 344 mixed hardwood logs. None carried the required ID barcodes or valid transportation documents. Colonel Endratmoko explained that the cargo manifest used blank permits intended for raw logs, which is a violation when transporting processed timber.

Legal Violations Identified

Preliminary analysis by Forestry Police investigators in the Riau Islands (Polhut Kepri) confirmed breaches of Indonesia’s Forestry Law No. 41 of 1999 and Law No. 18 of 2013 on the Prevention and Eradication of Forest Destruction. Both laws carry severe penalties for illegal logging and timber trafficking.

Evidence Secured, Investigation Ongoing

The seized timber has been secured at the dock while officials conduct a recount to verify figures against the vessel’s manifest. Authorities are also tracing the consignees allegedly linked to a licensed timber-processing business under PBPHH (Forest Product Processing Business Permit).

Community Involvement Praised

Major Bakamla Yuhanes Antara highlighted the importance of public vigilance in tackling illegal logging. “This successful operation shows how citizen reports strengthen law enforcement efforts to safeguard our forests,” he said. “It’s a collective commitment to stop forest resources from being plundered for private gain.”

Wider Implications

The incident underlines persistent challenges in combating illegal logging across Indonesia’s maritime trade routes. For Batam, a critical hub in the SIJORI (Singapore-Johor-Riau) region, such enforcement strengthens environmental protection while also safeguarding legal timber trade. Regional neighbors, including Singapore, closely watch these crackdowns, as cross-border smuggling often impacts wider supply chains.

The thwarted timber smuggling in Batam reflects both the persistence of illegal logging networks and the growing effectiveness of joint operations between security forces and communities. Beyond law enforcement, the case highlights how vigilance in maritime hubs like Batam contributes to regional environmental protection and the integrity of legal timber trade.
