A harrowing case of familial betrayal and child sexual abuse came to a grim conclusion as a 59-year-old man was sentenced to 21 years in prison for sexually assaulting his young grandniece over four years. Even after moving out in late 2021, the man continued to abuse the girl when visiting occasionally. One particularly chilling incident occurred in the kitchen when the man forced her to perform oral sex, only stopping when her younger brother entered.

The man’s abuse was not confined to their residence. In December 2022, he invited the girl and her brother to a movie. Despite her reluctance, the girl agreed for her brother’s sake. During the screening, the man slipped his hand under her clothes, violating her sexually. The victim pushed his hand away and moved to sit beside her brother. These events highlight the perpetrator’s calculated manipulation in various environments to exploit his victim.
Legal Proceedings and Sentence
The man pleaded guilty to aggravated rape and two counts of aggravated sexual assault by penetration, with six additional sexual offence charges considered during sentencing. To protect the identity of the young victim, a gag order prohibits naming the offender.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Lim sought a heavy sentence of 23 to 25 years imprisonment, along with an additional year’s jail in lieu of 24 strokes of the cane—a punishment not applicable here since the man is over 50.
The defense lawyer requested judicial mercy due to the man’s ill health, including end-stage renal failure and multiple hospitalizations since arrest. However, Justice Hoo Sheau Peng ruled he would not factor the defendant’s health into sentencing, concluding that 21 years’ imprisonment was a sufficient sentence. No jail term was added in place of caning.
