A Malaysia-registered truck was caught at Woodlands Checkpoint carrying more than 3,600 packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes hidden in its tyres and doors, underscoring ongoing smuggling attempts despite repeated enforcement actions.

Hidden In Tyres And Doors

On Aug 22, Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers flagged a Malaysia-registered truck for enhanced checks at Woodlands Checkpoint. A closer inspection revealed multiple secret compartments stuffed with contraband cigarettes, including inside the truck’s tyres, doors, and the walls of its cargo bed.

A Familiar Smuggling Tactic

In total, officers seized more than 350 cartons and 3,600 packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes. ICA noted that concealing items in tyres is not a new method, but smugglers continue to attempt similar tricks despite previous cases being intercepted.

Case Handed To Singapore Customs

The vehicle was seized, and the case referred to Singapore Customs for further investigation. Offenders convicted of dealing with duty-unpaid cigarettes face fines of up to 40 times the amount of duty and GST evaded, and may also be jailed for up to six years.
