Mass layoffs across IT, customer care, and fulfillment divisions raise questions about post-merger strategy.
Tokopedia has laid off about 420 employees over the past two months, as part of restructuring efforts within its merged entity under TikTok and GoTo. While the company has yet to issue a direct statement, TikTok said the move reflects routine business evaluations and long-term growth plans.
Hundreds of Jobs Cut
According to reports, around 240 employees were dismissed in August 2025, following 180 layoffs in July. The job cuts span several divisions, including information technology (IT), customer care, order fulfillment, and warehouse operations.
TikTok Responds
A TikTok spokesperson acknowledged the restructuring, framing it as part of regular business reviews. “We routinely evaluate business needs and make adjustments to strengthen our organization and deliver better services to users,” the company said in a statement on August 25.
Merger Contex
Tokopedia became part of a merged entity between TikTok and GoTo’s e-commerce business in Indonesia, a consolidation that has prompted significant organizational changes. Since the integration, the unit has been undergoing operational restructuring to align strategies and reduce overlapping functions.

Continued Commitment to Indonesi
Despite the layoffs, TikTok emphasized its commitment to the Indonesian market. “We continue to invest in Tokopedia and Indonesia as part of our strategy to drive sustainable growth and innovation,” the company said, underscoring long-term expansion plans.
Uncertain Outloo
While TikTok has positioned the layoffs as part of broader efficiency efforts, the move raises concerns about the stability of jobs in Indonesia’s e-commerce sector following large-scale mergers. Analysts suggest the restructuring could streamline operations but also reflects pressure to achieve profitability in a highly competitive market.
The layoffs at Tokopedia highlight the growing pains of Indonesia’s e-commerce consolidation under TikTok and GoTo. As restructuring continues, the balance between efficiency, innovation, and employment stability will shape the sector’s future trajectory in the region.
