Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing promises new performances and greater capacity for Singapore’s 61st birthday

After nearly a decade, Singapore’s National Day Parade (NDP) 2026 will return to the National Stadium at the Sports Hub, offering a larger venue and “fresh ideas” to mark SG61.

A Return to Kallang After 10 Years

Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing announced on August 19, 2025, during the NDP 2025 appreciation event, that next year’s parade will be staged at the Singapore Sports Hub’s National Stadium. The parade was last held there in 2016, the first and only time since the stadium’s opening in 2014.

Covid-19 disruptions and venue redevelopments meant that recent parades were relocated—three at the Padang, following earlier years at the Marina Bay Floating Platform, which closed in 2022 for transformation into NS Square.

Bigger Stage, Bigger Audience

The shift to the National Stadium will double attendance capacity compared with NDP 2025 at the Padang. While the Padang accommodated about 27,000 spectators, the stadium can hold 55,000, allowing more Singaporeans to join the celebration in person.

Fresh Ideas, Fresh Performances

Chan promised that the 2026 parade will feature new concepts, performances, and experiences. He invited Singaporeans to contribute suggestions to make SG61 “special and meaningful”, highlighting the opportunity to showcase “different aspects” of national ceremonies that a larger venue can support.

Costs and Management Changes

When the National Stadium hosted NDP in 2016, costs reportedly reached $39.4 million, nearly double that of parades at the floating platform, which cost between $15.7 million and $17.9 million. However, since Sport Singapore took over management of the Sports Hub in late 2022, costs are expected to be more sustainable, making the venue a more feasible option for national events.

Passing the NDP Spirit Forward

Chan also used the occasion to reflect on NDP’s role in uniting Singaporeans. He urged the younger generation to look forward to SG100 in 2065, envisioning “something even more spectacular” as a continuation of the national spirit across generations.

The return of NDP to the National Stadium in 2026 represents both a homecoming and a step forward. With greater capacity, new creative elements, and a venue managed under national ownership, Singapore’s 61st birthday celebrations are set to combine tradition with innovation—offering a unifying experience for an even larger audience.
