Former secondary school teacher sentenced for targeting teenage students through social media and direct contact.
A shocking case of a former secondary school teacher in Singapore preying on teenage girls has ended with the man receiving a nine-month jail sentence. Dubbed a “serial predator” by prosecutors, the teacher exploited trust and social media to attempt sexual acts with three girls in 2021—two of whom were his former students.
In 2021, a 33-year-old Singaporean male former secondary school teacher initiated inappropriate and sexual advances toward three teenage girls on separate occasions. His actions involved using Instagram’s “vanish mode” to send suggestive messages designed to disappear and evade detection. Two of the girls, aged 16 and 17, had already left the school, while the third victim was a 15-year-old student councillor still enrolled at the school.

From 2017 until his departure in late 2021, the teacher regularly interacted with students on his personal Instagram account, accepting follow requests and engaging in conversations. For the first victim, a former student he had taught in Secondary 1, the man prompted her to fantasize about him and proposed becoming “friends with benefits” — implying a sexual relationship. When rejected, the victim reported the conduct to a former teacher.
The second victim, also a former student, was contacted with inappropriate inquiries about her sexual interests and faced propositions including renting a room together for sexual activity. She too refused and reported his behavior. The third victim, still attending the school, was lured to a hotel room where the man attempted to kiss her and coerced her to perform a sexual act, which she resisted. He ceased further actions when she showed clear discomfort and later drove her home.
Post-incident, the third victim suffered substantial emotional trauma, including stress requiring medical leave and sleeping pills, and an inability to form romantic relationships. The man continued to send her inappropriate messages even after leaving his teaching position, apologizing only after reports were filed. The court heard that all three victims have faced long-lasting effects on their studies and mental health as a consequence of his predation.
The prosecution labeled the former teacher as a “serial predator,” and he pleaded guilty to four charges under the Children and Young Persons Act, including attempting to procure indecent acts from minors aged 15 to 17. He was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment, with bail set at S$20,000. The Ministry of Education confirmed he ceased employment in March 2022 and has not worked as a teacher since.
This disturbing case underscores urgent concerns over safeguarding youth against abuse by figures of authority and highlights the complex risks posed by social media platforms in enabling predators. It also reinforces the need for vigilance and reporting mechanisms within educational institutions to protect vulnerable students.
The ramifications of this teacher’s predatory actions stretch beyond the immediate victims, calling attention to the emotional and educational impacts on affected youth. For Indonesians and Singaporeans alike, this case reinforces the critical importance of stringent protective measures for teenage students and continuous monitoring of adult conduct in educational environments. It also emphasizes the role of parents, educators, and authorities in recognizing warning signs and intervening promptly to safeguard young people from exploitation.
