Bank Indonesia targets over Rp6 trillion in QRIS transactions by end of 2025

Digital payment adoption in the Riau Islands is accelerating rapidly, with QRIS transactions reaching Rp4.14 trillion in the first half of 2025 — a pace that could break all previous records by year’s end.

Record Growth in Digital Payments

The Riau Islands’ QRIS transaction value hit Rp4.14 trillion between January and June 2025, closing in on the Rp5.01 trillion achieved in all of 2024. Bank Indonesia (BI) Kepri Chief Representative Rony Widijarto said the trend points toward surpassing Rp6 trillion by December.

Volume Targets Set High

QRIS transaction volume grew 117% in 2024 to reach 9 million transactions. BI Kepri now aims for 50 million transactions in 2025, highlighting the rapid shift toward cashless payments in both consumer and business sectors.

Cross-Border Transactions Boost Tourism

Cross-border QRIS payments are also climbing sharply. Transactions with Malaysia grew from 7.83 million in 2024 to 9.6 million in just six months of 2025. Payments with Singapore rose from 1.8 million last year to 2.83 million in the same period, indicating growing comfort among foreign tourists using QRIS in Kepri.

Expansion to New Markets

BI Kepri is preparing to extend QRIS partnerships to Thailand and Saudi Arabia. According to Rony, this expansion could significantly boost tourism, culinary businesses, and the creative industry, making transactions seamless for international visitors.

Benefits for MSMEs and the Local Economy

The ease of QRIS payments is enabling micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to access financial services, accelerating money circulation in the real economy. BI encourages all local businesses to adopt QRIS to stay competitive in the digital era.

Driving Regional Economic Growth

BI Kepri views QRIS as a key driver for regional economic development in the years ahead. With digital transactions becoming the norm, the system is expected to strengthen Kepri’s position as a leading tourism and trade hub in Southeast Asia.

Kepri’s surging QRIS adoption reflects a broader shift toward digital payments in Indonesia, positioning the province as a model for cross-border payment integration. For both locals and international visitors, the convenience and reach of QRIS could redefine tourism and commerce across the region.
