Colorful maritime traditions revive community spirit during Indonesia’s 80th Independence celebrations.
The waters of Belakang Padang erupted in cheers, music, and racing boats as thousands gathered to witness a vibrant maritime tradition honoring Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day.
A Celebration at Sea
On Sunday, August 10, 2025, Belakang Padang’s waterfront transformed into a festival ground as residents and visitors from across Batam and beyond flocked to watch the Gerindra Cup I Traditional Sampan Layar, Speed Sport, and Ketinting Sport competitions. The event, starting at 9:30 a.m., combined entertainment with cultural preservation, spotlighting the rich maritime heritage of the Riau Islands.
Leaders and Community in Unity
The races were officially launched by Batam Mayor Amsakar Achmad and Deputy Mayor Li Claudia Chandra, joined by high-profile guests including DPR RI Member Endipat Wijaya, Kepri Vice Governor Nyanyang Haris Pratamura, and Kepri Police Chief Irjen Pol. Asep Safrudin. Mayor Amsakar encouraged the community to use the occasion as a bridge for unity, while Li Claudia reaffirmed Batam’s vision of progress and prosperity through infrastructure, public service, and job creation.

Competitive Spirit and Cultural Pride
Participants from seven districts in Kepri competed across categories—Kolek 9, 7, and 5—alongside speedboat and ketinting races. Despite occasional rain, excitement never waned. Spectators lined the harbor, children perched on parents’ shoulders, and traditional music accompanied the brightly painted sails cutting through the sea breeze.
Boost for Local Economy
Beyond sport, the event boosted the local economy. Stalls selling traditional Malay dishes and cold drinks bustled with customers. Rina, a local vendor, expressed joy at seeing Belakang Padang bustling again, noting how such events rekindle the vibrancy once common in the area.
Preserving Malay Maritime Heritage
Gerindra Batam Secretary Aweng Kurniawan emphasized that the event, initiated by Endipat Wijaya, reflects a commitment to safeguarding local wisdom and supporting coastal MSMEs. He envisions the race becoming an annual tradition, strengthening both cultural identity and economic resilience.
A Festive Symbol of Independence
The winners received the rotating Gerindra Cup trophy, now a symbol of coastal racing prestige in Kepri. As the sails came down and the music played on, the day’s festivities stood as a living testament to the region’s enduring maritime roots and the collective spirit of Independence Day.

The Belakang Padang sampan race showcased more than athletic skill—it reaffirmed the Riau Islands’ deep cultural ties to the sea while bringing tangible benefits to local businesses. For coastal communities across Indonesia and neighboring Singapore, such traditions are powerful reminders of the unifying role culture plays in fostering economic growth and social harmony.
