A knife attack between neighbours leaves one man dead and another seriously injured in Yishun

A dispute between neighbours at a Yishun HDB block turned deadly on July 19, ending with one man fatally injured and another hospitalized. The police are now investigating the incident, which has shocked the quiet residential area.

Knife Attack Followed Corridor Dispute

At around 5:20 p.m. on July 19, the Singapore Police Force and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) were alerted to an incident at Block 334B Yishun Street 31. Responding officers found a 53-year-old man injured in his flat and a 44-year-old man lying motionless at the foot of the block. He was pronounced dead at the scene by SCDF paramedics.

Preliminary investigations revealed the two men, both residents of the same block, had been involved in a dispute along the corridor. The younger man allegedly attacked the older neighbour with a knife, leading to serious abdominal injuries. The deceased was later found to have apparently fallen from height after the attack. Police stated that foul play is not suspected at this stage.

Corridor Conflict Sparked Tensions

A female resident on the fourth floor told Lianhe Zaobao that she heard a loud thud before witnessing the older man with visible injuries being escorted into an ambulance. The case appears to have been triggered by a long-standing disagreement between the two neighbours—reportedly over shared corridor space.

According to a family member of the deceased, the younger man had expressed frustration over his neighbour allegedly blasting loud music when he passed by their unit and honking at him when they crossed paths downstairs. These incidents had reportedly intensified tensions between the two, leading to talk of relocation. The man and his wife had already found a new home and were preparing to move.

Victim Taken To Hospital, Suspect Dies At Scene

The 53-year-old victim was still conscious when paramedics arrived and was taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital for treatment. The 44-year-old suspect, however, was found at the foot of the block and was declared dead at the scene. While police have yet to confirm whether he fell or jumped, the incident has been ruled non-suspicious at this point.

Photos from the scene show a blue police tent and cordoned-off grass patch at the base of the block, with investigators interviewing nearby residents. The SCDF has not released further medical details about the surviving victim.

Family: Deceased Was “Gentle”

The deceased man’s family, speaking to 8world News, described him as a quiet and gentle person who had likely been pushed to his limits. They said he was due to join them for dinner the same evening and had not shown signs of violence or instability previously.

The family believes harassment from the neighbour may have triggered the violent altercation, although they are awaiting the outcome of the police investigation.

Community Shocked, Investigation Ongoing

Residents of Yishun expressed shock at the sudden violence, with many noting that the block had never experienced such an incident before. The police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing and are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward.

This incident underscores the potential dangers of unresolved interpersonal tensions within high-density housing environments and raises questions about conflict resolution and community intervention strategies.

The fatal altercation in Yishun is a stark reminder of how unresolved neighbourhood disputes can escalate into violence. For both Singaporean and Indonesian urban communities—where communal living is common—open communication, mediation, and early intervention remain crucial to maintaining peace in shared residential spaces.
