Two-day immigration system failure causes chaos at Johor checkpoints, full recovery confirmed

A major e-gate system failure at Malaysia’s busiest immigration checkpoints, including those in Johor Bahru, left over 380,000 travellers stranded, exposing systemic vulnerabilities and drawing sharp criticism from state leaders.

E-Gate Breakdown Sparks Travel Chaos

On July 18, a widespread system glitch crippled more than 200 e-gates across Malaysia, severely impacting foreign travellers at land and airport entry points. At Johor Bahru’s Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) and the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB), queues stretched for hours, with travellers—mostly Singaporeans—waiting over four hours to clear immigration.

The glitch originated from a data integration issue within the MyIMMS system, which slowed cross-verification processes with international security databases. Local media reported the problem began around noon on July 18 and disrupted operations into the following evening.

Chief Minister: “An Embarrassment To The Country”

Johor Chief Minister Onn Hafiz Ghazi did not hold back, calling the breakdown “an embarrassment to the country” and a reflection of government inefficiency. He warned that the disruption undermined the image of Malaysia—especially damaging as Singapore and Johor work closely on the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) initiative.

“Such weaknesses not only inconvenience the public but may also tarnish the image of the state and nation,” he wrote in a Facebook post, referencing the critical role Johor’s land checkpoints play in regional mobility.

Partial Recovery Followed By Full Restoration

By 6pm on July 19, 26 of 68 e-gates at BSI and three of 12 at KSAB were back online. Manual counters were activated to manage the backlog, and traffic flow was reported as “under control” by the evening, according to Johor’s transport committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh.

On July 20, Malaysia’s Border Control and Protection Agency chief Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain confirmed 100% restoration of the automated gates nationwide. “As we speak, everything is already up and running,” he stated at a press conference at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

No Signs Of Sabotage, But Concerns Linger

While investigations continue, officials ruled out sabotage. The failure, attributed to connectivity issues between MyIMMS and international databases, affected Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminals 1 and 2 in addition to the Johor checkpoints.

Although Malaysian passport holders were not impacted, foreign visitors from 63 countries—including Singapore, Australia, and Japan—were directly affected. This includes users of Malaysia’s expanding autogate program launched on June 1, 2023.

Recurrent Failures Raise Red Flags

This incident follows a similar glitch in December 2023 that stranded hundreds due to a faulty network core switch at BSI. With 1,568 automated passport scanners across Malaysia, recurring failures raise questions about the reliability of the country’s border technology infrastructure.

Both federal and state leaders have urged swift reviews and long-term fixes to prevent future disruptions, particularly at Johor checkpoints—the region’s busiest international land entry points.

The e-gate failure not only disrupted travel plans but also highlighted Malaysia’s urgent need to modernize and secure its immigration systems. For Indonesians and Singaporeans who frequently cross the Johor-Singapore Causeway, the glitch serves as a reminder of how critical seamless border technology is to daily life, tourism, and economic cooperation.
