Panic at Tanjungbalai Karimun port as man from Malaysia admits smuggling 40g of meth
A shocking incident disrupted operations at Tanjungbalai Karimun International Port on Monday morning, as an Indonesian man returning from Malaysia confessed to smuggling drugs—then leapt into the sea in a desperate escape attempt.
Dramatic Scene at the Port
On July 14, 2025, around 9:00 AM local time, 43-year-old YF, an Indonesian citizen arriving from Malaysia, triggered alarm at the Tanjungbalai Karimun International Port. After passing through passport control, YF’s anxious behavior and incoherent speech raised suspicions among customs officers. Authorities suspected he was under the influence of drugs.
Sudden Confession, Sudden Escape

Before a thorough inspection could be conducted, YF unexpectedly admitted to smuggling methamphetamine, claiming he had discarded the drugs near the pontoon area of the port. Without warning, he sprinted and jumped into the sea, attempting to hide beneath the pier’s foundation.
Quick Response by Authorities
Due to the tide being low, customs officers and local police were able to swiftly locate and detain the suspect. The arrest was confirmed by AKP Arif Ridho, Narcotics Unit Chief of the Karimun Police. “The suspect is now in our custody at Karimun Police Station,” he stated.
Evidence and Further Investigation

Authorities recovered 40 grams of methamphetamine allegedly connected to YF. The suspect is reported to be a resident of Tembilahan, Riau. According to AKP Arif, police are currently pursuing further leads to uncover a larger drug trafficking network that may be operating between Malaysia and Indonesia.
Growing Cross-Border Drug Concerns
This case highlights the increasing trend of cross-border drug smuggling via maritime routes, particularly between Malaysia and Indonesia. It also underscores the vital role of customs vigilance at key ports like Karimun. Investigators believe this is part of a wider smuggling operation and have launched an extended probe.
This daring smuggling attempt underscores the urgent need for regional cooperation on narcotics enforcement, especially along busy travel corridors like Malaysia-Karimun. For both Indonesia and Singapore, the incident is a stark reminder of the persistent threat posed by transnational drug syndicates operating under the radar.
