50-year-old Singaporean suspect arrested in joint Thailand-Singapore sting linked to drug syndicate
A Singaporean fugitive wanted for drug trafficking has been arrested in Bangkok following a coordinated operation between Thai and Singaporean authorities, uncovering links to a broader cross-border narcotics network.
Arrest in Bangkok: A Coordinated Strike
On July 5, 2025, Thai police and immigration authorities raided a hotel in Bangkok, arresting Tan Leng Chong, a 50-year-old Singaporean man wanted by Singapore’s Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB). He was apprehended alongside an Indonesian couple, believed to be accomplices in an international drug trafficking syndicate operating between Thailand and Singapore.
Tan had been on the run since July 27, 2023, and was the subject of a CNB arrest warrant issued in May 2025 for his alleged role in supplying drugs to associates in Singapore. His capture followed surveillance that began in Pattaya, Chonburi province, before authorities traced him to the capital.
Drugs, Accomplices, and Assets Seized
During the raid, authorities confiscated ecstasy, ketamine, and Erimin-5—a sedative drug controlled in many countries. According to Thailand’s Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB), the Indonesian accomplices—a man and a woman—were believed to be a married couple actively involved in the same trafficking operation.
In addition to the hotel raid, police searched two properties in Pattaya linked to Tan, although no further drugs were found. A Maserati with a fake license plate was also seized as part of the operation, underscoring the syndicate’s use of luxury vehicles to mask their criminal activities.
Cross-Border Collaboration Pays Off
The successful arrest was a direct result of intelligence sharing between CNB and Thai authorities, particularly the Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) and ONCB. CNB had provided the initial tip-off, prompting surveillance and eventual coordinated action.
ONCB’s Secretary-General Phanurat Lakboon confirmed the arrest in a Facebook statement on July 8, emphasizing Thailand’s ongoing efforts to tackle narcotics-related crimes. This arrest is part of a wider crackdown, which has uncovered 140 drug-related cases between October 2024 and May 2025 across Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos.
Returned to Face Justice in Singapore
Tan was extradited to Singapore and arrested by CNB shortly after his return. He will face charges in court on Thursday for his involvement in trafficking drugs—connected to a 2024 case where another Singaporean was caught with nearly 4,990g of cannabis mixture.
Further investigations are underway into Tan’s suspected involvement in money laundering, with over S$242,000 in bank accounts already frozen. If convicted under Singapore’s Misuse of Drugs Act 1973, he may face the death penalty.
A Warning for Transnational Crime Networks
Tan’s arrest underscores Southeast Asia’s intensifying crackdown on transnational drug syndicates. With strong cooperation between agencies like CNB and ONCB, regional enforcement is closing the net on traffickers attempting to exploit national borders. The message is clear: no criminal can outrun justice when nations work together.
The arrest of Tan Leng Chong reflects a growing urgency in Southeast Asia to dismantle drug trafficking networks operating across borders.
